so for the first time on sunday i tried to use my TC on my Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM lens. the TC worked great with my Canon 100-400 II zoom lens but it does not like "talking" with the 500mm. is this a known issue?

not only did i have to switch to manual focus to use it because it would not focus(it just stuttered) but also the exif file didn't indicate that i was at 700mm, only at 500mm.

thanks in advance-Mike

edit: typo in title , should be TC III

Definitely not a known issue. V2 TCs were the most commonly used TCs with that lens. I don't remember the actual release dates of TC versions and the 500 f4 L IS but those dates are the reasons for them being a common combination. I used the 500 f4L IS with both 1.4II and 1.4III TCs on 3 bodies without issue. Obvious first step is to clean and inspect contacts on everything , lens, body, TC.

500 f4 L IS USM - released 1999
V2 TCs released 2001

Despite me posting twice recently that I don't follow Canon's recommendations to attach TC to lens first, rather then TC to body, if I was having problems I would try following that recommendation.

Oh well, as I said "I used the 500 f4L IS with both 1.4II and 1.4III TCs on 3 bodies without issue."

thanks for the responses. I'm beginning to believe it may be related to a recent lens repair.

A friend of mine is using (successfully) both the 1.4 and 2 x Mk3 extenders on his 600 F4 L IS (same generation) - I think that "repair" may need looking into.
