As a hobbyist photographer, can flash drives be considered for use as back ups?

No. Flash drives are (with exceptions) not built for data retention. The high densities and the technology used (MLC) don't provide very good insulation for the electrons and the bits might get lost over time. There are exceptions, e.g. Swissbit offers (offered?) a flash drive designed for storage.

Not if you want your data to be safe. Flash loses charge in its cells over time, plus backups need to be incremental and offsite to be useful. Use BackBlaze.

Probably something like this -

Re MediaSonics ProBox Enclosures - I'll give these simple 4 drive enclosures two thumbs up

I've used a pair of them for the past two and a half years combined with a 5 drive Synology+ NAS.

With my hired IT consultant, we just finished our "mid-cycle" build review of our system and...

We simplified by eliminating the NAS completely by adding another 2 WD Black 4TB hard drives to my tower and combining/condensing the backup volumes in the ProBox enclosures (Direct Access Storage, DAS#1 & DAS#2).

Will probably create an off-site storage ProBox - DAS#3 - to create a static, off-site backup - to periodically refresh.

Keep it simple stupid? or something like that - iow, avoid unnecessary complexities.

YMMV.

Well, I just went the opposite direction, from a couple of MediaSonics boxes to a Synology box. The MediSonics were always rather dodgy in operation (not to mention loud as hell).
