And why not just send it directly to Canon and avoid the middle man fee?

.
His insurance was paying for it. . I suspect that if one is not paying one's self, then it is nice to have someone else package the thing up and mail it. . I really don't care for packaging things and writing the address on the box and taking it to the post office (or arranging for another means of having it shipped). . Why not let someone else do the little unpleasant things if insurance is going to pay for that to be done?

"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

We have a local camera shop also, and any repair work is sent out to canon. I have also sent a 1Dx to Midwest Camera Repair (Which does very good work) And even they sent it to canon and it ended up costing me the same amount as if I would have just sent it to them to start with.

Now, its just 100 times easier to just send it to canon. Everything I have sent in, they have done a very good job and fast return time. im happy with them.

I have boxes, and bubble, and a scale, and an online USPS account, so it takes less time for me to do this than it does to take everything to a local store and have them do it for me, then have to go back and get it later. :) Plus I feel that money is better spent on gear than to a local shop to box it up and send it on its way.

It is pretty easy these days, provided you have a box and bubbles somewhere, to just package something up, pay for a label and stick it to the box, and schedule a pickup than to run out somewhere to have it done elsewhere.

I think it comes down to what people enjoy vs what they dislike, and the amount of time it takes is not really what maters.

I couldn't care less how long something takes to do. . But I care greatly about whether something is pleasant or unpleasant.

I dislike looking at an address and then having to write it down, looking back at the original address a time or two to make sure I wrote it correctly. . Takes less than 60 seconds, but it is unpleasant. . I also dislike putting things in boxes and adding the bubble wrap, etc, to make sure they are packaged securely. . You are correct in that this doesn't take much time .... but time is something I have oodles of and don't really care about.

Over the years, I have sold and shipped over 600 items on eBay, so I have a lot of experience packaging things and mailing them. . And so I know quite well by now that I really truly do find it unpleasant.

Conversely, I like driving around to places and getting in and out of the car and walking into places and talking to people at counters. . That is rather pleasant (unless it happens to be the Post Office, which for whatever reason I HATE going to and dealing with). . So that is what I would prefer to do, even if it took three or four times longer than packaging something. . Time has nothing to do with it at all.

Byt the way, the whole "print a label" and "schedule a pickup" thing doesn't work for some people. . For someone such as myself, who will not have a computer printer in his home, there is no printing of anything. . And scheduling a pickup? . Ha! . In my life that wouldn't work at all because I never know when I will be available or not because I have an "on call" job and often get called off suddenly, and I am certainly not going to leave a package out where the neighborhood meth heads could steal it.

I know that what doesn't work for me may very well work for others ..... I certainly don't need anyone to reply to my post and tell me the obvious. . Sheesh!

I hear ya, I wasn't expecting my reply to be replied to, but here we are. What's this world coming to, must be a forum epidemic? :)

I like taking that $100-200 saved and all the time as well to put it into my hobbies or my growing Milwaukee tool/accessory collection! The "pile" gets bigger each day it seems. :D Now I just need to save up for that miter saw and folding table...

Just spent a small fortune, er I mean savings, on their packout system, very ingenious. These packout boxes would be great for those with alot of camera gear too, but one would have to buy the pluck foam blocks to put then into the cases. They clip apart/together so nicely, wheel it all around, and are rugged/waterproof. If I didn't have my pelican cases, I would seriously consider these. And they have compartmental storage units that slide on/off too, great for batteries, cards, paper/pencil, flashes, etc.

Sorta like how cutting out the middle man and finding a local repairman doesn't always work for some people, eh?

I told you the opposite, so this doesn't apply to me.
