An idea for portable SSD, small and big.

I bought a pair of Hyper m.2 x16 cards to use in my kids computers to add fast SSD function but turned out I could not use those cards with the motherboard I had. But now I also had the two 1 TB SSD sitting there......send back....did not....LOL.

Found Qnine Enclosure at Amazon, and put the M.2 SSD in that. It has worked great for about 6 months or so. So I just bought a second one this week. Now I have two 1 TB SSD drives as portables. They work great. The enclosure comes with both a USB cable and a USB-C cable. For Windows no issues, but for Mac you'll need NTFS for Mac. Without that software a Mac can only read the drive.

It's a bit cheaper than buying a prepackaged SSD and smaller.

Yep, some neat stuff out there in the way of enclosures, but some care is justified to insure the drive is compatible with the enclosure. Orico just announced an enclosure that is clear, not that there is any movement to observe, but neat to think of what all is going on in those chips. I have some other enclosures by Orico and they are quite well made, even when you think they are nothing but a “box” for an SSD. Although Orico is made in China, I believe the design effort comes out of Sweden.

See https://9to5mac.com …nvme-ssd-enclosure-usb-c/ (external link) for a review of the enclosure.

I have put two 2.5" 500GB SSD units into a single external USB3-connected RAID 1 enclosure, so I have two copies of all data backed up while on extended trips.

I just got a 1TB crucial NVME and a Qnine enclosure for portable backup. I found that although initial write speed was 400+ MB/s the drive overheated quickly and reduced write speed to 70 MB/s

I don't have any heat issues, the drive getting warm yes but not particularly hot. Did you install the thermal barrier and do you have the enclosure w/ssd orientated so the slotted surface is up (and not covered)?

I installed per instructions. It works fine for simple file copying but when doing a 300 GB image copy from an internal ssd using Acronis Backup heat became a problem.

You got me wondering so I did a long awaited project of moving about 100 GB which may not be offering a fair comparison. I'm also running a 1TB Samsung M.2 drive which could make a difference. You might want to see if one of the temperature monitors is compatible with your specific drive and then monitor temperature. I use the Crystal Info that is described at https://mashtips.com …erformance-monitor-tools/ (external link). If it reports a temperature on your drive, then try to determine the operating temperature range spec. I believe the Samsung is 70 deg C (158 deg F) but I don't remember where that came from.

For future purchases lean toward metal materials as opposed to plastic. Qnine makes both. The metal costs more but help keep things cooler. I have even seen advertised enclosures with fans! I have a 2nd drive, also Samsung, in a Sabrent enclosure. Runs quite cool.

My first unit did not come with the thermal strip.

The second did, so I installed it. The memory board sits TOO high off the main board so the strip DOES NOT TOUCH BOTH. LMAO.

Bringing this back up......I have been very happy with my two mini 1 TB NVMe drives so I bought two more! LOL.

The transfer rates are incredible. With USB 3 I transferred 6.26 GB in 52 seconds.

I have been trying to find a good enclosure to hold 4 and there is one, holds up to 4 NVMe drivers at 2 TB each. As the NVMe drive prices drop this will make a great future backup plan.

Other World Computing Express 4M2 4-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure.

and found and bought these today. So I'm holding off on the Lacie Doc for now.

Mike
