The last few years I gave up on photography. I will make a long story short. I lost some interest in it. People wanted me to do sr portraits and weddings. I wanted to do it for fun not money and when it became a job it wasn't fun. Also, family became a priority as well as failing eyesight. Gave my gear to my wife to use at school and donated some. Mom got sick with cancer. Thought she recovered but didnt and it took her life on 2/14/17. My dad has Parkinsons, insulin dependent diabetic with dementia and came to live with me and the wife. Wife suddenly passed away from an asthma attack on 5/11/18. Just me and dad now. I had corrective eye surgery so I can see again. Recently I was asked to do some photos again and said "yes". I am trying to rediscover myself again. I am thinking about switching gear brands. I have a Sony Alpha 6000 and 2 kit lenses those will do for now. I photograph mostly people and objects. Thinking about macro and maybe sports but not sure about the sports. I'm not completely sold on the way the Sony feels in my hands. My last gear was Canon and a good Tamron macro lens but all that equipment is gone. I have been looking at the Fuji XT3 it looks more camera(ish) and looks like it may have more of a traditional feel like the Canon line.

Anyone got any input or suggestions about the Fuji or lenses? I know invest in glass not bodies. Or are there any other cameras I should look at? I would like to keep the price down to about 2k for the body and a good starter lens if I get back into this.

Thanks

Good lord you've been through the wringer! Perhaps photography will help you escape.

I switched from Canon to Fuji and love the system. I don't have the xt-3 as I don't see the AF advantage over what I have to be a huge benefit to what I shoot. Not sure what you shoot but right now you can get a brand new xt-2 for $800. Absolutely killer price. The 18-55 'kit' lens is really, really good as well. You could pick up the body, grip and kit lens as a bundle under $1200 I think. Then you'd have another $800 for more glass. You might find a used 50-140 for that or consider the 10-24.

Go to a camera store and try them out in your hands. For me they fit great. I did not like the ergo of Sony either. I'm loving the size and weight advantage over my FF Canon kit. No regrets switching.

Good luck!

Fuji X-T30, great little camera with most of the benefits of it's bigger brother X-T3. And like Scott says, don't overlook Fuji's 'kit' lenses they are great bits of glass. Both the 18-55 and the 55-200 work well. The EVF on the X-T3 is huge so it's really nice in use.

Fujifilm cameras and lenses.

Sorry to hear of your plight. My condolences.

While the XT-3 and other Fuji cams are regarded very well, perhaps it’s time to make the switch to a new system. May take some getting used to, but, nothing like rocket science. ;)

If you want to stick with Canon, you’ve got the EOS RP with adapter, with any EF/EF-s glass you could imagine. Or, a variety of mirrored cams. Push the budget a bit, for an EOS R mirrorless, as well.

Nikon also has the Z6 which may push the boundary a bit, but, another fine camera from what I’ve heard.

Basically, in your case (and others’), it’s a great time to be a photographer with so many choices/price points/gear, etc.

GL!
