I have been photographing dogs for years and have been fairly successful in my imagery. However, Sony has just introduced the Firmware 2.0 for the APSC A6400 (and has also introduced that capability in firmware for the A7iii) which has enabled Animal Eye-AF. This is a game changer and makes photographing dogs a LOT EASIER for me; since it automatically selects and focuses on the nearest of the dog's eyes. This feature is especially handy when photographing a frisky puppy who is moving around. In selecting Continuous Auto Focus (AFC) as well as Animal Eye-AF, the camera will lock on to the frisky dog's eyes even while the dog is moving...

Do I absolutely need Animal Eye-AF? Certainly not but, it is just one more tool, like auto-focus and in-camera exposure metering, that makes things easier and more pleasant for me.
I have just updated the firmware of my Sony A7iii to ver.3.01 and animal Eye-AF plus Full-Time Eye IS works every bit as well
