I had to send my 7D for service yesterday (camera won't power on). Has anyone here sent for service? How was it? Did they go above and beyond or just did the repair? I'm asking because I don't know if they are honest or just want your money.

I sent my 5D in for the mirror fix (to Mississauga - after they closed the shop in Calgary) and it was back within the 10 days as expected. And free of charge as advertised. No Issues

Granted, that was a few years back. Maybe someone has more current info.

I have had two interactions with them at the Mississauga centre:
1) my 100-400L got smashed when I took a tumble. They fixed it at fixed/quoted price promptly.
2) Like you, my 7D was powering on /off intermittently. The rep at the front desk replaced the battery door there and then for me at no charge.

I think they are great :)

All corporations want your money. In this context Canon typically gets it by performing honest repairs based on estimates that are approved by the customer. You can refuse the estimate if you are not happy with it. I've had a couple of post-repair incidents that I wasn't entirely happy with but Canon was usually quick to resolve them to my satisfaction. I've never felt that repairs or fees were unwarranted or unjustified. I am not sure what you mean by 'above and beyond' but if they perform a quality repair for a price I find acceptable I'm not sure what else I could want beyond that. The new facility in Brampton is state of the art but some of the phone agents are a bit rough around the edges.

What I meant was while fixing your camera, they would clean sensor, make adjustments, etc...

They make adjustments, replace and clean parts, etc. to the extent the repair requires. Occasionally cameras are returned with cleaned sensors or other unexpected maintenance but that could be in the spirit of customer service as much as it could have been necessary because of something during the repair process. I wouldn't expect free adjustments or cleanings as a matter of course from Canon any more that I would expect my garage to give me a free oil change because I paid to have my brakes changed.

I had two L lenses in HQ for service and I own 5D MKII with shutter replaced by them.
Fast service with status update on-line.
With Canon it depends on the lens. 50L is badly made lens with great AF and unique optics. They could put lens block and front of the lens via gummy glue on factory (this is how 50L is made), but once this glue worn out and Canon service is re-applying it, never feels the same.
They just laid to me on reception what it is how it supposed to be... Another L zoom lens was fine after same service. And 5D MKII with new shutter is also fine.

Based on your other replies, I guess you don't care much now about Canon service, given the repair estimate!

You are correct. They didn't tell me what was wrong but $700 is a bit steep for a camera that's only worth about $300-$400.

They don't really get into the specifics of what is wrong, they make an assumption that there is a main board that needs replaced, so the quote covers the labor to tear things apart, replace a board, put it back together with any new seals or rubber adhesive, and then a camera cleaning. If you went through with the repair, the actual price might be less, or even more, once they tear into the camera. I feel they always give the worst case scenario though.

Just out of curiosity, why didn’t you ask about this before sending the camera back? Also, as “Teamspeed” stated in elaborating about the $700 possible charge, if we knew about the camera not powering on, we might have been able to offer some things to try.

We already went through all the things to check for the camera not powering up in the other thread.

I tried everything, the camera shop looked at it and tried everything, I asked this board for feedback and everything they suggested, we had tried.
