Which of the various 17-50ish f2.8 lenses are best for a crop camera? I would mostly use it for indoor sports, like basketball under the hoop and for other general "walk around" type stuff. Which brand has the best AF system?

I did borrow a Canon 17-55 on my 7D for a trip overseas and was happy with the images but did not really do any fast action type photos on the trip.

When I shot sports with the 7D and 7D II, the best 17-50 lens was an EF 50mm f/1.4 prime. I tried the Tamron (major fail) and even the EF-S 17-55. The latter is a great lens but AF for basketball just wasn't there and being able to shoot at f/2.0 with the prime was very valuable.

I also used a 24 f/2.8 IS USM and it was great. Plus the 85 f/1.8.

Primes all the way.

When I moved to full-frame I tried the 70-200 and it was great but heavy. I ended up back with the 50 f/1.4, 85 f1.8 and 135 f/2.

For many years I used a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 on my 60D. It originally was an expensive lens and was not dock compatible but I got a good copy that yielded great image quality. Some places still have it around and usually at an attractive price.

When I purchased an 80D I acquired the Sigma 17-70, not an f/2.8 mind you, but still an extremely versatile lens. It is dock compatible and is often sold by Adorama as a kit with the dock at the same price as the bare lens. It remains on the 80D as my walk around lens.

Once you decide, if Canon or Sigma, check the refurbished listings for both manufacturers.

There was a big tent sale at our local camera shop recently and between the sale and trading my 18-135 STM, I was able to get the EF-S 17-55 for about $400, new

The 17-55 is a solid lens. It's basically an "L" lens minus the build quality.

I have not had a chance to use it too much yet, mostly some backyard photos of the pets and some flowers. Hoping to use it some for some cross country meets

had one with my T2i and kept it for the 7D.

sold the 7D to upgrade to a 5D3. gave the lens to my wife who took the Rebel.

just dropped my daughter off at college and we gave it to her, and im looking to pick up another one for the wife.

also got one for a friend (i got it, he paid for it) who has a T3i and he thanks me over and over again for turning him on to the lens.

I have a T3i as well, I have not tried it with that camera yet but I am sure it will do well.
