My 7D just died so I'm looking to purchase a good full frame. I do mostly portraits and landscape, don't do many sports shots anymore (just the odd time), I'm looking for your opinions... I have a 70-200mm f4L and a 35mm f1.4L in my kit. What do you suggest I should get? A used 5D Mark III is over $2000 so that's a definite no !

If those were the only two choices, the 6d for sure. It will do better from both a DR and high ISO perspective.

If you like the crop factor and would like a higher resolution file, consider the M50.

This gets you the latest mirrorless tech from Canon (shared with the RP and R), with better IQ than the 7d. Lightweight, travel friendly, touch and tilt screen, etc.

I see you're in Canada. Here in the states, solid 5D3 body's can be had in the $1200 range, ~$1500 - $1600 Canadian?

I have to assume that the budget is somewhere around or below the repair estimate of $700, so even in the states, a 5D3 likely falls outside the desired budget. :)

I still love my old 5d2 but an EOS RP seems like a good option for a low budget full frame body.

You should be able to find a good used 5D3 for about $1500. If you cannot afford that much get the 6D.

You're all great. I think I'll get the 6D Mark I. I found a few with shutter count between 1,000 and 18,000 for about $900 Canadian. I have no idea what is considered "high Shutter count" on a full frame. I'm choosing the 6D because I don't know what other camera has a good IQ and ISO performance.

The 6D is excellent. I loved mine. You will be happy with it.

What Sony specifically? Any of the latest FF mirrorless Sony's are well outside the budget, and then you need different batteries, adapters, etc.

Moving to other platforms might make sense if you have the budget that allows the transition over, and then over time you sell off the other stuff. The 6D will be a very nice body, you will really like the improvement in IQ (detail, high ISO) over the 7D, and you don't have to deal with lens adapters, new menu structures, new batteries, etc.

Sony has great cameras, but if I were in the same situation, I wouldn't consider a move at this point.

I was a long time user of the 5DII and still have mine. When the 6D came out I wanted to upgrade but after shooting with the 6D for a bit I opted not to as the difference in final image quality between the two was negligible for the type of shooting I do. That said, if the 5DII had died and I needed to replace it, I would have opted for the 6D without hesitation over the 5DII. The two cameras are very similar but the 6D is better in a few areas. I guess I'm saying that either is a good choice but if you can get a 6D, go with that one first.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Well congrats to you - the 6D is definitely a good camera, as others have pointed out. Your experience gave me some hope I might be able to get a decent price on my own used 6D...
