I'm using my Canon DSLR with Magic Lantern. Many of you know part of ML allows the camera to snap shots with motion detection and at a farther distance, though I haven't completely explored it's full function. It's useful in areas such as animal watching or aiming at a specific target and waiting for something to happen, which brings me to this question. I'm a PI and usually shoot video with my JVC camcorder, when on surveillance. I do believe the ML only allows that feature with pictures and not video, which is why I use the camcorder over the DSLR. Therefore, I'm wondering if such a handheld device, whether a DSLR or camcorder, offers a motion activation feature. It would be advantageous to keep the camera aimed at a subject's area and then start recording when movement occurs. After all, it's not always possible to remain focused on the door of someone's home or business during the entire surveillance. This would help in case the eyes roam away for a minute.
Anyone know if such a camera exists? Thanks

Though, in case others are curious, I'll elaborate on why I could use this. Since my eyes can't always be focused and waiting for a move to partake because often, we investigators will write reports or summaries, jot down recent activity, etc. In fact, an incident occurred with a subject and I was writing down my field notes of time and what partook, thinking the subject entered the home for awhile, but they re-emerged while I was writing my notes. I had to grab my camera, turn it back on since it shuts off after awhile, wait for it to turn on, then hit record. You'd be surprised at what can be missed within those first seconds and if I didn't see them until they reached their vehicle, I lose the money shot, especially when I'm trying to capture someone who's falsifying an injury and they're doing cartwheels to the car.
