Daughter's birthday coming up. She's a 26 year aspiring photographer and her work keeps getting better and better. I gave her a T3i years ago and since then she's been "hijacking" my equipment. Right now she still has my 7D Mark II which I "loaned" her over 6 months ago. I myself am getting by with a 6D Mark II but I travel to Costa Rica and Brasil a lot for wildlife photography and that's when I reclaim my 7D II. My daughter does pet photography and some wedding photography as well as equestrian competition photography. I don't think she always needs the advantages of a 7D II for "fast moving subjects". I want to get her a new camera, not used. All that said, what comes to mind is the Canon 80D. I'm wondering what opinions you would have given her needs I described. If any other ideas those are welcome too. The lenses she uses almost exclusively are the Canon 24-105mm and the Canon 70-300mm "L" lens. Thank You. (Budget around $1K)

Canon 7D Mark II; Canon 70-300mm "L"; Canon 100mm Macro; Tamron 24-70mm; Tokina 11-16mm 2.8

...but then she will start to want to borrow HIS 6DII to use as a backup unit to her own 6DII...no self respecting pro wants to leave him/herself exposed by the chance of gear failure on a job!

If it helps. here's a camera you can cross off the list ...

I wonder it this camera is worth buying as a museum piece.

She knows enough about photography to know what camera she needs. Why don't you ask her?

One way to approach this question might be to ask, "Which is the hardest or more important case, weddings or sports?" By that I mean, sports is more demanding in terms of AF and frame rate, but weddings might demand better image quality, low-light performance, etc. If she is paid for the wedding shoots, that would be the determining factor for me.

On the basis of 'most important use', a 7D2 would be great for sports and adequate for weddings, whereas a 6D2 would be good for weddings, less so for sports.

I don't know for sure but I'm guessing USD1K won't buy you a body that's great for both, unless quite old?

The OP said his daughter is an aspiring photographer. It's not clear if she wants to do this to earn money, or as a hobby.

If she wants to be a pro, and given the types of photography she's involved with, that leaves two choices in the Canon family. Either the 5D4 or 1DXII (or perhaps the new R series). But the OP wants to buy a new camera, and only wants to spend $1k.

I think a good option is to buy her a gift card to either a online photo retailer or local camera store. If the OP lives in the SoCal area, Samy's Camera may be a good choice. That way she can combine the gift card with her money to get a 5D4 or any camera of her choice.

It would seem that she is looking at some pretty demanding shooting if she is doing weddings, pets and sports. Might be hard to fit that need for $1000, especially if she needs a kit of lenses as well. Maybe give her your 7D mkII and save the $1000 for you to replace it.
