The image quality is really quite impressive on the A6400... I have sold my Canon gear including a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens and I am debating whether to but a Sony 200-600mm or just to rent the Sony 100-400mm G lens from my local camera store for the relatively few times that I need a lens of this length...

Received mine Friday (t-3 days) and have been tinkering.
Replaced the OEM foot with a Wimberly replacement. It's a good foot, though I'm shipping the OEM foot to Hejnar Monday or Tuesday so he can model one.
Added a Lenscoat. Haven't and won't use the OEM hood. I use collapsible rubber hoods that take a B+W UV filter (sacrificial). Too many times I've lost shots due
to need to reverse a hood or remove the lens cap :(

So far working the lens on the a9. Will get to the Riii and a6400 soon I hope.

Here's the kit in battledress-

Here's the a9+200-600 on one side, A7Riii, Tam 17-28, Tam 28-75, FE70-300G on the other; all in a Mindshift 18L to give you all (or those considering) an idea of packed size. Mindshift
18L will go under Delta airline seat.

Singe case. I've found the Kinesis C850 to be perfect for attach a9+200600. Will accommodate attached 1.4TC too

I like the side lugs on the lens. Makes it easy for my plan B/insurance Op-Tec Uni-Loop to be installed in case my Kirk Security Strap ever fails

Out in the filed yesterday evening 'hawking'. Shooting at 600mm, in my humid environment, means dealing with atmospherics :( But the combo did fine considering the hawks were 60+ yards
away. Continuous AF (green box with vertical bar on each side) works really well with the combo too

https://flic.kr/p/2gUp9uf (external link)Decided (external link) by MedicineMan4040 (external link), on Flickr

Weight. I'm holding the combo surprisingly long....much longer than I thought I'd be able too. It is almost same weight as my 400DOii but it just seems lighter. Probably the much larger front element of the DOii so far forward creating a moment arm of torque.

Probably the greatest feature (and a side effect of the internal zoom) is the incredibly short throw from 200-600mm. And it is effortless....just a thumb can do it. No more wresting the zoom ring several turns to go long or come back wide.

https://flic.kr/p/2gUpj6V (external link)One more (external link) by MedicineMan4040 (external link), on Flickr

600 affordable mm's native e-mount, a huge advancement for Sony shooters and super sharp at 600mm (despite the atmospherics)

https://flic.kr/p/2gUofKx (external link)One leaves (external link) by MedicineMan4040 (external link), on Flickr

And it takes a 2.0TC quite well I think. I've not shot with the 1.4TC yet but hope too soon. Here's one using the 2.0 From other reviewers I'd thought the 2.0 would just plain suck but
not the case.

Well in a bit over 2 weeks I'm taking the 200-600 to Alaska and see if I can get lucky with some critters :)

I wish that Sony (and Canikon) would wake up to the 21st Century and supply their lenses with tripod mounts that have tripod feet that are grooved for the Arca Compatible system. It sucks to pay two-grand for a lens only having to fork out another hundred or so to get the lens into the shape that the manufacturer should have done in the first place.

After all, how much extra would it cost to groove a tripod foot for A/C compatibilityvmad

I stated this to a Canon representative one day and he got very defensive stating, "Well! Most photographers hand hold this lens due to its great Image Stabilization"!

I countered by saying, "I agree that the IS of this lens is great but, if the aim was to produce a lens for mainly hand holding, why didn't Canon produce it with a tripod collar that was removable and save me a couple of ounces?"

No answer from the Rep!

I also like wish these big lenses had siding lens hoods like the Canon 300mm f/4L IS lenses.

I understand the consternation, understand and agree that the 200-600 will be sought after many a bierder/wildlifer, and hope with a big chunk of my heart that the mini-a9 is coming. I've pre'd the A7Riv because in crop mode 10fps and 175-200 buffer in an a9/a7xxx ergo'd body BUT if they announce the mini-a9 then I'll have to become very contemplative on the direction I want to go.
All of that said NO way to leave the D500+500PF. I can see selling the D850. I like it and all but really nothing I can't do with my A7Riii, but the D500+500PF is really lightweight compared to the 200600 and you know how I preach about weight all the time ;)

Unfortunately, the mini A-9 we were hoping for turned into an expensive A6400 with very few extra attributes..

gotta agree with you here...first thing I did for the 70-200GM was buy the RRS foot...it is Arca Swiss and has a screw mount for putting it straight to a monopod...it is what should be standard.

I rented a 200-600 for chasing elk this weekend...and went out to test it with the 2X extender...I will not be able to handhold it at 1200mm...LOL...the view through the viewfinder would have made you think I was on a boat. But its sharp enough handheld and moving like I was...tripod mounted it should be fine.
A little comparison of 200-600 and 400-1200...these were all handheld.

Shot at 600mm...tripod mounted. even at f/6.3 the background was nicely rendered OOF due to distance from the subject.

The fog was pretty awesome. Hard to see through far away...but just right closer.

Thanks. Very minimal post work done too...just a minor bump in WB and sharpening. That was it.

I went to a local park today and in 40+ years of photographing birds this is the first time a Hereon has let me walk to within 30 feet of it and not flown off even when i moved to follow it it just stood there .
