I am sure I have the CD, but with my new Macs, no CD drive anymore. The most recent OS for iMac - Mojave, has a much more robust photo editing suite than what was there in the previous OS. It has all the different sliders and histogram, etc. I just need to mess around with it.

Probably should shoot these "fun" photos in RAW as well. I have only been doing JPEG for my sports shooting, which is what I started out doing and then found out that I enjoy more aspects of photography as well.

Photo Elements should have come with your camera if you have the CDs, I believe. That is a good starting point.

OP used a 7DII for these images. Did it come with Photoshop Elements?

It probably did, I will have to go back and look in the box. Will have to get a external CD drive as my new Macs do not have an internal drive anymore. (progress, I guess...!)

Canon says “no” to Photoshop Elements but a 7DII should have come with the EOS Solutions Disk. That can be downloaded from the Canon website so you won’t need an external CD drive.

Download the files from Canon and input the camera's serial number and he's off to the races.

... but ended up getting a Canon 17-55 f2.8 for $519.

That's fantastic. Our local shop, used to be a Canon dealer, has a new one without box in the display case and they want $825. I saw one on eBay or CL recently for $3xx.

Wondering if 17-55 or 24-70 is a better range for a second sports body.

I use the 17-55 quite often on a crop body for indoor sports, particularly on the baseline for basketball or if I can be right on the sideline for volleyball.

The 17-55 is pretty much legendary for crop bodies. That lens stayed attached to my 450D, and later my 7D, almost constantly despite having more much more expensive glass sitting in the bag. Just an overall affordable, utilitarian, and fantastic lens.

I'm seeing them for sale starting at $300 for pretty beat up ones, and really covering the whole price range up to new but lots of them in the $350-500 range.

The only negative on the 17-55 is its build quality. Just like so many other similarly built lenses like the 28-135, etc, the 17-55 develops a bit of a wobble when extended. Doesn't hurt anything, you just have to honor the fact it will happen and feel like something is a bit loose.

Also if you put a filter on the front, you can help prevent dust from getting behind the front element. However, it is about a 15 min deal to take off that front element and clean out the dust too if it really bugs you.
