My Sony A6300 backup camera just started to crap out on me, and I was thinking of buying a 6D mk II to replace it... Boy this sure messed that up. Sony keeps pushing the needle on performance. 15 stop dynamic range. Native 61 mpx, over 240 mpx with pixel shifting. I know Sony Gmaster lenses are rated to almost 100 mpx resolution, I guess well find out if that is true.

Technology never sleeps. It's constantly moving. One has to ask themselves where the line ends. Cameras are becoming like cell phones, with a new release each year. "This one is better than the last one." Of course it is...but, does one invest in the body? Or the glass? No 'L,' 'GM,' etc. lenses are cheap, so, pick the right system based on the glass you wish to use. Beyond that, skills...not everyone has them. ;)

People who are not happy are usually quicker to share .

This camera is definitely not for me, as im content with fuji for stills ,the only sony I await is the a7s3 for my video needs

But still amazing what sony can offer for $3500!

This camera has me very interested indeed, since it has the A9 focusing system, eye af, and a better EVF, 5 stop IBIS, along with all the other specs. It does look like it is much more ergonomic too. I will have to try one out at the store once they hit the shelves. Dual cards, 10fps (probably not with full raw mode though), very high resolution, etc. It ticks off all my boxes, except for a fully working touch rear screen which this camera doesn't have. Sony does a poor rear LCD it seems. :)

Unfortunately I would have to use all my Canon lenses, because I don't have the funds to switch out. The 24-70 II, 100-400 II and the 100L are my favorite 3 lenses.

It is what I would want Canon to come out with on their next R. I don't need 61Mpx, but 40-50 would be nice. We already know Canon has a long way to go with eye AF, and sensor readout speed, so I am not convinced the next R will a huge step forward. I hope to eat my words though.

It has me interested also.

Probably my biggest hesitation is processing the huge files day to day. My mac would fall over I think!! Equally I love the rest of the package and the big files would be great for one offs like airshows when I'm trying to get awesome pics of Typhoons afterburners with my 70-300!

I've read a few bits and see the words compressed, uncompressed lossy. I think I read on another forum that the Rii (?) allowed lower res files - maybe that was just the jpeg? I dont think sony do mraw and sraw like Canon. I can see the Riv offers 26mb apsc files.

Would someone be kind enough to try and explain?

If the Riv gave me the option to take, say 30mb FF raw files with the same 15 stops dynamic range, I think I would be all in for a Canon -> Sony switch. Thanks.

Aps-c crop, only, for the smaller file sizes, not FF.

Viewing their jpeg samples, 2 things pop out at me. First, the jpegs in the samples are HUGE!! Second, the detail in the jpegs is insane. :)

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I just heard from a photographer who got his hands on the camera yesterday

There is no Sraw or Mraw settings. Full 61 mp files only

If this is indeed true, thats not very good at all

I am trying to verify now

Confirmed

Question asked to sony reps

" No other resolution options currently. The question was asked if it’s on the radar. The answer is yes, but it’s a matter of priorities and currently it’s not a priority in the global marketplace."

There ya have it

Well that is a fly on the ointment for me personally. I do not want those huge raw files all the time. :(

I await a future firmware update before seriously looking at the camera.

I pity the runway model shooter that later goes to process and tries to figure out how to get through 2000 61meg raw files (or larger).

Even worse, not many will even print beyond an 8x10 these days, if that. I can’t remember the last time I printed a pic. Forums/Social media...small files...quick hits. Who needs 61mp except for ‘critical’ size, like billboards (which, by the way, are going LED eventually, too). Positions are being eliminated all the time...that’s the future, and so will camera’s be, unfortunately. The Google Pixel 5 or 10 or iPhone 15 or 20, will make it that much easier, cause people with skills in photography will just die out. Those that remain, well, time will tell. ;)

Large resolutions are useful for more than printing. Billboards actually need small resolutions due to viewing distances.

Such as? Art galleries? Books? Mags/papers? Ads? Most people would not print larger than 8x10, so, most don’t need 60mp of resolution. There are certain use cases for it, but, not a lot.

May as well leave these in both related threads. Confirmed yesterday .. no touchscreen .. no S-RAW or M-RAW .. and the screen is even smaller than the EOS R.

The new A7R iv doesn't really compete with the IDX mk ii the way the A9 tried. It's barely more than the 5DSR which has smaller RAW options and works appreciably even for studio work. And aside from FPS, it seems out-classed by the Fuji GFX 100. Yes, the latter is near $10K, though.

It seems like they should have given it a little bit more and raised the price to $3800

So back to OP’s issue of a dying camera...any idea if you’d make a jump to this iteration of the Sony? Just curious. ;)

Odd that a not too old camera body would start to give you issues. Does it go through a fair amount of abuse?
