My first interaction as a new member of the DOTN Forums. My go-to setup for shooting birds in flight at a local dam is to mount my Nikon D7200/Tamron 150-600mm G2 combo on a tripod with a gimbal mount. This arrangement has served me well. I have recently been shooting birds with the same camera/lens combo handheld with the aid of an SB-700 flash equipped with a Better Beamer flash extender. Liking the results, I am now considering using the flash/Beamer combo when shooting birds in flight when they pass within the distance of this rig. I want to mount the flash/Beamer on a flash bracket which will elevate the flash some distance above the camera/lens on the gimbal mount. I have looked at brackets for doing this online but I am not willing to pay what I consider to be rather exorbitant prices for what is essentially a length of aluminum bar with a few bends and an arca mount attached. Has anybody made their own flash bracket for use with a gimbal-mounted camera, and, if so, do you have plans or photos of your creations? I'm confident I can create my own but would love to hear of your experiences and what, if any, pitfalls you encountered during the build or upon putting the bracket to use. Thanks in advance for any info provided. The attached low-res image is typical of the shots to which I would like to add just a touch of fill flash.

Thanks! I have cobbled together a bracket using an arca compatible rail and an old Stroboframe flash bracket that is working pretty well. I'll be interested in what you have come up with.

It looks like you are quite capable of working something out.
I can't find all the photos I have but just some of the setups I have configured.
I think it's really worth building a kit of bits so you can make your own rigs.
I rarely get a rig right the first time and often want to make some changes after I am happy with a rig.
Plates, clamps, brackets, cold shoe mounts etc

The round, rubber covered tubes are a Joby part. The 210mm arca plate in all 3 photos comes with it. I can't find the actual part number , but I thought it was "210mm universal plate" kit or similar. The tube has 1/4inch threaded holes top and bottom. The plate is thin, not as strong as some but when you build a rig, it often just supports a flash, not a large camera and lens so saving some weight is good.

Photo on the left is a night rig. Cold shoe mounted on top of one of the Joby tubes. The other Joby tube is a handle and has a pressure switch for momentary torch (that's what we call the thing that makes light!)
There's a right angle double clamp at the top, heavy, but automatically keeps everything square.
I have another right angle clamp so that rig can go on my 500 f4 quickly.

Photo on top right is my Sony RX104 night rig. The only trick with that one is the lever clamp that the camera mounts to. No room for a screw clamp. (Well, there is room, but no room for fingers to grip the knob).

Once you get something sorted and working, it's fast to rebuild anytime you need (for the times you have dissasembled and made something else)

Found it: (it must be 208mm)

Joby Hand Grip With Ultraplate 208 or Joby Pro Series Hand Grip With Ultraplate 208 For Dslr Cameras

$26 https://www.amazon.com …ess-Tripods/dp/B00RZD2Y0Y (external link)
With 2 of these you have a good start to be able to make lot's of custom brackets.

Good work on all those projects! I agree you can never have too many "bits and pieces". Having shot professionally for 40 years I have accumulated many odds and ends that have come in handy when I want to jury rig something together. Thanks for your examples and for taking the time to share them with me. You can catch some of the shots I am getting with this rig by looking at some of the most recent posts on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/smokymoments (external link)
