Thanks to all for the info. I bought my 5D II new at the end of its availability just after the 5D III was introduced. The Canon battery that came with it still works in my new 5D IV. The six Wasabis were purchased over the following year but don't work in the 5D IV. I suppose what I've learned (although shouldn't be surprised) is that when knockoff battery makers reverse engineer Canon's batteries, they don't always cover all the bases. Anyway, the Wasabis worked very well in the 5D II for years at a great price, so I'm not that disappointed - just surprised.

I don't know if anyone has one called them "n" they all seem to be labeled LP-E4,.

They can be fine, but all seem to suffer the same hot or miss issue that goes all the way back to even the Nicd(nimh?) batteries for the original 1D,.

The physical latch and weather sealing is never as robust as the OEM Canon ones.

NEVER throw out an OLD OEM Canon DEAD LP-E4!!!
It's easy to swap the latch cover with a new 3rd party battery and get a result as reliable as an OEM Canon.

I've personally used the ~el Cheapo "Kastar" brand LP-E4 with good results. I bought a three pack before I went on our last trip to Africa. One of them came with a latch that broke almost immediately, but I had a bad OEM Canon so I swapped the latch. That battery has been the most used LP-E4 in my 1D4 since then. (coming up on 3 years)

The LP-E4N was a newer battery introduced during the 1DX cycle.

So just to clarify, I have several Wasabi batteries and a charger now.

After several months to over a year, the Wasabi battery in my camera
still has enough charge to power a 5D IV.
Full function remains available, with approximately 80% charge showing
as available. The Canon battery was extremely weak when I acquired
the camera, after only around 25,000 shots.
Wasabi has dethroned the Canon OEM lineup full-on in cost and performance.

The same holds true for the BP-511 no-name batteries for the 50D.

Yup. I agree with you Craig.

My Wasabi batteries are what I want in my 6D. I've got the original Canon's and some STK (I think that's the abbreviation). The STKs were really abused by riding in the console of my jeep unused for a few years, enduring extreme heat and cold and getting pushed around like a lost tube of chapstick. The Wasabi batteries are no doubt the king of the hill, the STK's are in the middle, and the Canon are at the bottom. Being higher amp batteries I make sure to charge the Wasabi (and STK) batteries in the Wasabi charger. The lower amp Canons get charged in the OE Canon charger.

I'm running two OE Canon LP-E8 batteries in my old T2i w/battery grip. Honestly, I don't think these have ever been replaced. The T2i sat unused for a few years until I recently drug it out for a second camera while shooting starry skies. The batteries showed minimal charge...but did show charge. I charged both batteries and they shot at least 200-300 shots and the battery icon shows a solid 50% power left. I'm not sure if the batteries' charge will soon fall off a cliff or if the discharge slope will be gradual. I think that for sitting there as long as they did that they've done a good job. But, if I ever replace them *and* Wasabi makes a replacement for them it will be Wasabi that goes back in the grip.

After reading through much of this thread I assume that batteries and chargers sold today (Wasabi for instance) would be fully compatible since the 5D4 has been out for a while now so chip compatibility has been thoroughly addressed.

1. Is everything fully forward and backward compatible?
2. Can I charge my old Canon batteries in the new Wasabi charger?
3. Can I fully charge the Wasabi's in the Canon charger?
4. Any error messages when using the Wasabi battery in the 5D4?
5. Is Amazon a good place to buy the Wasabi battery/charger package?

Thanks for any support.

No errors on the batteries in the camera...

I find that charging the batteries in their respective charger seems to be better than using the Canon charger.

Amazon is indeed a good place to pick those up. Just keep an eye on the vendor's reputation in general.

1 - Don't know about forward compability, I got mine for a 5D4 and have nothing newer to test with.
The generic BP511 packs have been good from the 40D to the 50D.
2 - Doing so may actually harm them, as they're made for charging higher-capacity batteries.
3 - Probably not, see #2.
4 - None whatsoever.
5 - It's where I found mine, directly from Wasabi.

All of my LP-E6 batteries (most aftermarket, sterlingtek or wasabi or powerextra) all work in my R6.

I have charged all my batteries in both types of chargers, but it feels like the Canon charger doesn't charge up the aftermarkets as well as the aftermarket charger. I have a wasabi or sterlingtek charger, but also have since purchased a dual bank USB charger, so that it can be mated with my large solar panel to charge batteries while at games.

I use a Ravpower 24w foldable solar panel, and a powerextra lp-e6 dual charger with all my batteries. Takes about most of the day on a sunny day to charge both, but its easy and free while at an all day tourney.

Got my Wasabi batteries and charger last night. Charged and installed them and no problems at all - totally transparent. Plus I placed a double order which gave me four batteries and two chargers. Each charger has the ability to charge two batteries at once. All for $50. One Canon battery would have cost $63 which is nuts.

I have used Wasabi and Promedia in my 5D4 and they worked just fine. However in a R5 or R6 you will not get the higher burst shooting speeds in either form of mechanical shutter with an aftermarket battery (or a mostly discharged Canon battery). However you can still get full 20fps in electronic shutter with an aftermarket. So I'll be sticking with Canon for the future batteries and use the aftermarket in the 5D4 or as an emergency battery in the R5.
