Anybody know enough about IBIS to share whether it can add to long-term camera maintenance costs or not? With DSLR I'm familiar with shutter life expectancy and repair intervals that may arise after a long time.

With IBIS, do parts actually move around the sensor, and does it wear? Or is it all just software controlled with no wear?

Thanks.

I had a Konica-Minolta Maxxum 5D, which had IBIS (a very early version). When it started to fail, it would lock the shutter so no shots could be taken. I'm sure current technology is much better, but IBIS can fail. ILIS can and does fail. Failures are rare. Moving the IS from the lens to the body makes the body more complicated but the lens less so. I would expect current IBIS to be at least as durable (and probably more so) than current IS in the lens. I think most of us upgrade bodies more often than lenses, so that should help offset the fact that the camera is used all the time (unless you actually use multiple bodies) and a lens is used only some of the time (for most of us).

Thank you.

My curiosity is basically just trying to see whether new tech and features raise future repair costs and body life or if it just levels. IBIS is an extra, but on the other hand mirrors, etc., are removed.

It seems that newer lenses are getting bigger and more expensive the past few years. Hopefully camera bodies don't grow in price the same way. I don't mind the mirrorless bodies growing slightly.

If maintenance of camera bodies stays level, or less, that would be great.

Everything fails, mechanical items sooner than others.
