Value is always subjective and I would ask, would the book get published without your pic? If not, then name your price. If so, then donate. A middle ground for me would be half a dozen copy's and whatever you would charge for an A3 print. You could even do a book signing;-)a

If you are going to charge for an image being used in a book there are three things you need to take into consideration.

1) Where is the image going to be used: inside the book or on the cover.
2) What size is the image going to be: full page page , half page, quarter page.
3) How big is the print run; how many copies are going to be printed.

....It surprised me that you had to ask me about it. I thought that all of us already knew that this is the current state of the stock photo market ..... and has been so for many years now.

But I didn't ask about it (or need to). I asked a completely different question.

I know why photographers give away their work (generosity, ignorance of it's value, or the odd idea that having someone else use your work without compensating you is somehow flattering) but that wasn't what I asked.

I asked why people (the author/businesses etc) think it is OK that other get paid but not the photographer.

Indeed. If it was on the dust jacket I definitely want to get paid. :-)

In the past if someone wanted to use my images I would just tell them to buy a print and I'd give them a digital file of a resolution appropriate to their uses.

I wouldn't look to this to get rich. ;-)a

And for the record. No one has contacted me again. -?
