I used to hate the idea of caged animals in zoos. I couldn't imagine being cooped up in such small confines day in and day out. Until I started hanging out at my local zoo and getting to know both the people who care for the animals and the zoo's work behind the scenes. That's not to say that there are not some zoos that should be closed down but most legitimate, properly run zoos offer the animal kingdom some huge benefits.

My local zoo is small but I was amazed at some ot the large contributions they offer the zoological society. From successful breeding of endangered species to behavioral studies that can be used in the field to ensure the natural survival of some of the animals in their charge. It was enough to make me rethink their purpose.

If you're ever in the Dallas, TX area, check out Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.
