Is anyone using an external intervalometer with the A7rIII? I am dissapointed to find that the built in intervalometer will not work with bulb exposures.

I have a couple of these: https://www.amazon.com …_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (external link)

however never tried bulb interval shots, not really interested in camping all night and waking up to find a 5 second clip :-P

you consider faster lenses, typically, tracking the milky way, you want to stay at 20-30 second exposures. If you're tracking it on a slider or panning device, typically, those have built in intervalometers, I've got a few myself, and I honestly cant remember if any can do bulb.

I know that I've conceptually wanted bulb interval shooting, but in practice, no way. May I ask what type of photography?

if you're looking to do holy grail timelapses, look at: https://lrtimelapse.com/tutorial/ (external link)

but honestly, Sony's new intervalometer with the auto adjusting AE feature, you can pretty much do holy grail in camera, no need for fancy software.

I use one of these....

https://www.bhphotovideo.com …oss_version_ii_timer.html (external link)

as well as

https://www.bhphotovideo.com …with_shutter_release.html (external link)

which can do all kids of cool stuff.... such as act as a motion trigger or lightening trigger. Its set up on your cell phone.

Lots of options out there

I was looking into buying this camera. Would be my 1st Sony.

Does this mean you can not set the camera to exposures longer than 30 seconds without an external remote control??

Meike has a battery/vertical grip that works with any new A7 (possibly not the upcoming IV, since they've changed the body a bit)or A9. It includes an intervalometer with a RF fob controller.

Pretty good grip, too, about $100USD.

I don't think any current Sony allows exposures of over 30 sec. outside of bulb mode. The kind of noise I've gotten shooting 2 mins leads me to guess this is intentional.

Wow, I did not know. That is a huge deal for me. When I travel I do lots of very long exposure photography with 10 Stop ND's. Sometimes exposure of 3 or 4 minutes. Canon cameras let you set the exposure in Bulb up 99 minutes, over an hour and half! And I do not need to touch the camera or bring any additional accessories with me. I just click the shutter with my cellphone on the app, and it stops at the time I set before hand.

I also have no issues with noise on my Canon, even with 10 minute exposures!

That means you've got LENR enabled and it's shooting dark frames. Sony will do so as well. Dunno about the phone control app. Sony makes one, but I use my phone to control the motorized mount.

Also, I shoot sequences and my own dark frames and prefer a very flexible intervalometer.

Can you share an image where you had a 4 minute exposure? I'm curious what that would look like. I've dabbled in astro photography and nothing that long has ever looked compelling to me - that I've done. Looking for ideas of what the application for something like that would be. A 99 minute expose... have you done anything close to that?

it's certainly useful, and if you're into long long exposures in the 5minute mark and beyond, older sony bodies are hands down the best cameras. A7R2 + Smooth reflections = master long exposure shots. Absolute killer. you probably can probably achieve up to 20 stops of DR, WYSIWYG before taking the shot, possibility to end early in case weather changes too much. The way it works is that you're averaging 10 stop exposures until you feel like you've had enough time. Helps thin a crowd or silky water, here's a normal 3 minute+ exposure

Thanks... I am surprised how some of the people show so little motion. I don't think I've ever sat still for 5 minutes. And yet, I'm one of those odd balls that like people in his architectural shots. To me they add a sense of time and context to the shot - where as a peopleless shot doesn't say too much. I've done 15 to 30 second shots like this... never anything this long. Thanks for sharing.
