I've borrowed a couple of lenses and taken these almost identical pics, in natural light, 100% crop, no PP.

I must admit, on first glance they look pretty close. Who can tell me which lens is worth £500 (nearly $900) more than the other?

If you have taken both with the same focal length, then the second has a larger aperture than the first because the DOF is smaller.
I think the first picture is a bit sharper because of the larger aperture but overall I think too that the second lens is better, therefore my guess goes to the second lens...

I too feel the second one is probably the better picture. The tablecloth is a bit sharper, the bokeh looks a bit better to me (though not by much), and there's more contrast.

Were they taken at the same aperture?

I know that at 80mm, it's hard to tell two shots taken at f/8 with my 80-200L and my Sigma 18-125. Of course, I have a VERY good copy of 18-125, and at f/8, any flaws in it are hidden. wide open, though, is a different story.

Yep, I too think the second one looks sharper.

The 2nd has better Bokeh, but the 1st has better contrast.
Both look same sharpness.

the exif is intact, 1st is at f5 and 2nd pic is at f/4. i like the first shot better, the 2nd looks ever so slightly cooler so i'm going to guess #2 is an L lens :)

Very difficult to tell ;) which is your point I guess. If I had to plump for one I'd say #1

I think the more expensive lens is #2. I also think I'm hungry for toast and marmalade. ;)

Hard to tell as they're not the same image, I mean in terms it's taken from a different angle or the jar was moved. Did you use a tripod?
