Howdy All,

Caters News UK is offering me an "opportunity" to monetize one or more of my photos. There is plenty of info out on the internet; even fairly recent, about payment issues. Anyone here actually have good or bad experiences with them? Let me know! :-).

Would be interested to here feedback. I have a project that I think would work via syndication and they were one of the names I found.

I also found this article from earlier this year https://petapixel.com …-syndicating-your-photos/ (external link)

Howdy Dan,

Thanks for the article! Lots of good info. I'll give it a more careful read after work tonight :-).

One thing to note is that the first contract offered by Caters was for exclusive rights and a 60/40 (60 for me) split on money generated from the advertizing that went alongside with the photos - "Clickbait". 50/50 and non-exclusive are where things stand at the moment. As mentioned in your linked article, collecting payment can be slow. The topic of how much might be generated and how I can actually track the revenue was sketchy, to say the least. My shot that generated the most interest from them happens to have just won a local magazine's yearly photo contest and will be featured on the cover of the issue coming out this week. I'd like to see it get more/better monetization after that little boost in nortiarity :-). I'll let you know what I decide and how it goes. I think it would be useful to others if I post the long-term results of working with Caters, if I actually go ahead with the deal.

Howdy All,

I'm officially signed-up and have uploaded the photos they were initially interested in. I'll let you know if anything ever comes of it :-|.

Thanks, look forward to hearing about your experiences.

Just one question.... You mentioned advertising revenue. I understood that they sell content to publications (syndication). Is this ad based revenue a different biz model - do you have any details?

Howdy Dan,

If I have it straight, the story and photos have been sold to various newspapers (they sent me pdfs of what ran in 4 newspapers) and it's also running on half a dozen websites. You're likely right that it is "sold content" and not ad revenue. One way or another "pennies" will eventually flow into my account :-).

Example of the postings: https://www.dailymail.co.uk …ight-surfer-hits-him.html (external link)

If you Google search: “Dave Weldon, 63” Dolphin Porto
It’ll probably still catch the half-dozen sites that have it up :- ).

Within just a few hours of its release, our local Channel 7 News saw it on the Daily Mail website and called asking about access to the photos and story. I hadn't determined what value to place on the material, so I pointed them to the Caters News Syndication site to work it out through them .

Channel 7 said they spotted the article and photos on DailyMail.com and then tracked down my phone number. I don't exactly know how they got my number but it sure doesn't take much to get that kind of info via internet ID sites . The voicemail said "they hoped they had the right Dave: :-).

I'm "happy" to report that after 10 months and dozens of emails spread out over that time period, I finally got paid by Caters News this morning. It was about $300 minus $13 in PayPal fees for the overseas transaction. Glad to be closing that chapter...
