The main issue with PSE4 is you have to trick it to use Layer Masks - if you google for Photoshop Elements Layer Mask, you should find how to. Next you'll want to google for Blended Exposures, and you'll find some tutorials on how to do it - otherwise, a good place to start is "The Lights Right" video tutorial on it.
