I recently reached out to friends for doing a senior portrait session for portfolio building. I resized and posted 13 photos to put on facebook. The girl's Mom asked if there were more, how she could see them, and to know how to order and purchase prints. I hadn't planned on any pictures being bought.
Could anyone advise me what I should charge for 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, etc.? I told her I would give her a discount so this won't be my official long term price.

thanks

What are your costs to produce prints in those sizes?

I've had stuff printed from both Miller's and White House Custom Color. I'm looking at options for proofs.
I think the basic 8x10 print is around 4.00

Yup. Rough estimate is look at your material cost and double it. Also, was there payment for the original session? You might also look at others in the area to see what they charge.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

VERY important that your prices are reflective of your local economic conditions...Waco TX is not like Manhattan.

printing at Meijer (what USED to be a regional department store) is on par with the $4 8x10...

for a friend like that, i use the 2nd number in the size. i.e. 5x7 is $7, 8x10 is $10, 11x14 is $14 etc. its a fair mark up from cost and since i can send the image to the store and only have to pick them up (i let my wife pick them up when she does the grocery shopping) theres not any specialized running around to do...

YMMV

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

This is where local pricing comes in. Here in Dallas the going rate for a 5x7 printed is $.59 and an 8x10 $1.79 and out local Costco. Poking around the web the national portrait mills are offering a back to school special, 2-8x13s, 2-8x10s, 4-5x7s, 4-3x5s, 16-wallet, 5-5x7 greeting cards for $20. That sort of sets the low bar.

If she really wants to show her love she should be getting a 20x24 canvas print. Of course she would want that with a protective coating and mounted on a stretcher for framing.
