So I scored a couple 430 EX II's. With the one I already have, that makes three. I want to use two in a big softlighter, keep the third as a spare. Or maybe add it into the Softlighter as well. I know these flashes can only act as slaves, and it looks like the 622TX is the right transmitter, but do I need a trigger for each of the 2 EXII's, or will one optically detect the other? I think not. How to proceed? Trigger for each flash, I guess??

I have used the 622TX before but I believe you will need the receivers for each flash also (I may be wrong, it's early).

What I would look for is a used Canon ST-E2 which should do everything you want without the need for separate receivers. Used prices are in the sub-$100 price range.

Good luck.

You will need a 622C for each flash, and yes, the 622TX is the right transmitter. The ST-E2 mentioned above uses light pulses to trigger the 430s. If the 430s are not visible to the ST-E2, they may not see the signals and fail to flash.

Something like the godox/flashpoint R2 trigger would give you control of each flash individually with receivers for each. It would also allow you to easily expand into the Godox/Flashpoint system of flashes without having to buy new triggers and receivers.

Thanks, everyone, I really appreciate your help! Looks like a 622TX and three C's.

Curious why you'd choose YN over Godox.

I own the 622s but I bought them before the godox system was available. Godox seems like the better option.
