Batteries Drain with extender on Sigma Lens w/ 7D II

Mounted a 1.4x III canon extender on a sigma 150-600 sports lens on a 7D II. Batteries continue to drain when the camera is turned off. See red light on back of camera blink occasionally when camera is off. What gives. Is there a software fix for this, or must I disconnect them after each use.
