I got started in music photography about 15 years ago, because of one guy: Henry Diltz. He owned the Morrison Hotel Gallery in La Jolla, California and then in Del Mar, California back in the day. There was also a gallery in New York and I guess one in Los Angeles, as well. Nowadays I'm pretty sure just the New York and LA galleries remain.
I had the chance to meet him and talk with him for a great while during an in-gallery event featuring Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics at his Del Mar gallery some years ago. Stewart's also a photographer, and the event drew some Hollywood types, most notably the director Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous). But the star for me was Henry.
If you don't know who he is, Google him. He's such a nice, affable and approachable guy, and has photographed everyone from James Taylor to Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Joanie Mitchell, Frank Zappa, Richard Pryor, David Cassidy, The Kinks, Eric Clapton, The Eagles... the list goes on.
Who was your inspiration for getting started?
