Thought this may be fitting to camera vs. camera theme, and something photographers who have been buying and selling for a long time could answer.

The camera that prompted this post was the 5D mk ii. Good chance I will get one, but still thought the question is worth asking. Do any of you have a guess what the repair service life from Canon would be, based off other Canon bodies you have owned or were familiar with?

How much long do you think Canon would service a 5D mk ii?

When Canon quits servicing, how much longer would independent camera repair shops typically repair a body?

.
I would be surprised if Canon still services a camera so old as the 5D2.

When I buy very old bodies, I don't think about the ability to have them serviced. . Usually, bodies like this are cheaper than a repair would be. . I just plan on throwing them away when something goes wrong.

When a 5D2 has a problem, it is probably cheaper to just buy another one than it is to have it repaired.

.

"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I agree...

I've got one with plenty of life in it, fresh cleaning (based on use afterwards, which was 6 photos) with shutter at 41k..

Extra batteries, a pair of CF cars, every thing as new (slight wear but nothing major) plus a pixel/vertax battery grip and all the boxes and papers

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

I had a 5D iii already. And have the 5DS and EOS R now.

Was pondering the 5D mk ii because I still got a ton of nice images from the two of them I had 4 years ago. Been spotting deals in ebay with shutter counts as low as 400 to under 4000 this week, for $499 to $550 with good looking bodies. There was even a brand new one, for double that cost. If one of those only last 50,000 shots, it would seem a great extra body to keep on hand for extra.

But I would consider the 5D mk iii also ... partly why I haven't bought quite yet.

Actually, gray market 5DS is available brand new for about $1400 right now. But for $500, a super low shutter count 5d mk ii could come handy.

What are you thinking? Don't you realise that even the DSLRs that haven't even been released yet are obsolete, worthless dinosaurs, unworthy of truly gifted photographers?

Apart from everything else, the shutter on that thing will be deafening!!!!!

To me... IMO... just me... but $500 is too much for a used 11 year old camera. I'd rather spend that money on glass or a plane ticket somewhere.

Especially when a Fuji X-h1 with grip is $999 today. ;-)a

In the EU a manufacturer has to keep available Spares for a minimum of 10 years from the date of last manufacture. Probably different in the U.S. I never really enjoyed the 5D2 and had 3 5D3’s crap out on me ( I know I’m unlucky there ).

You have a 5D3, 5Ds and EOS R... Why would you want a 5D2, there isn't anything it can do for you at this point the other cameras can, and would seem like a waste of money to me personally.

Why not determine a single thing none of these are able to do for you easily or consistently and then concentrate on the solution to that problem?

I had the 5D mk iii

Last wedding, I shot with 3 bodies on a harness and also neck strap, each with a different lens. One was the M5 and the M5 can't touch the quality I got from the 5D mk ii. I can see a 5D mk ii being a 3rd body or backup to 3 and 4 other bodies. It's an idea though. If I gather extra cash on hand, I'm also open to a 5d mk iv ... 5DS ... 5D mk iii or even an EOS R for extra.

But I still find the old 5D mk ii memorable .. not exactly an old piece of junk.

I would get a 6d before getting a 5d2. Or get an RP....

Now I'm glad you mentioned that. I was dabbling looking at the 6D or RP yesterday, old reviews and stuff. But never held one. Having read your feedback over time here, that's encouraging and helpful to hear you suggest it. They both have one card from what I understand whereas the mk ii has two, but the body wouldn't be a primary, just an extra.

So yes, I'd gladly look into those more.

The 5D2 had two slots, but the SD slot was so slow...

The 6D has better ISO performance and and a bit more DR than the 5D2, and the same basic AF system.

I'm a bit of a hoarder with my gear. I usually hold on to my old bodies. I delude myself into thinking I'll use them. But the reality is.my 5D gathered dust once I got the 5DIi, and so on. I like having an extra body around for backup or a two camera shoot but I never pick up the old bodies when I have a choice. Unless you want a Canon DSLR museum like I have put the cash toward something new
