So far I've only used Photoshop and Lightroom. I edit light-handed and use a fraction of the features in Photoshop. Lightroom does 90% for me usually. But I get really irritated about subscription stuff like Adobe has, and apparently ON1 covers what 2 or 3 other softwares do if I'm ready right.

My question -- for those who use ON1, how long do you think it would take the average person to decipher the program to be able to get going with it? I'm assuming it can import and organize files, hopefully.

On a scale of 1 through 10, what rating would you give to:

Lightroom and Photoshop

ON1 Photo RAW

Hi, On1 IMO has a long learning curve there is an awful lot to it and as you use like me L/R first I would suggest Affinity Photo (https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/ (external link)) closer to Photoshop but does not and again IMO include so much that as a photographer you don't use, I also have Skylum Luminar and there Luminar Flex but there down side is the way they promote there product, just feel it's so intense for want of a better description. On1 remember is also for new releases each year quite expensive again IMO. Going back to Skylum I do like the FLEX option direct from L/R as a plugin. Affinity photo downside is the lack of the ability to install a lot of third party plugins although the Topaz ones seem to work OK. I gave up on Photoshop at the CS6 stage as I didn't like the idea of paying and never owning, I still have an original P/S CS6 on the disc. Try Affinity Photo alongside On1, loads of tutorials on both on Youtube and there sites. Russ.

Many Thanks,
Russell.

ON1 - a 2 out of 10. Inferior IMHO. I own it, very rarely use it any longer. And yep, they are subscription whether or not they call it so. If you have to pay for an upgrade every year, it it not the same as paying monthly?

Another vote for Affinity. Cost effective, powerful, easy to learn because it's almost like photoshop.

And a big vote for luminar. Yes, affinity has plugin problems but luminar can also be run as a standalone.

You have many choices you did not have two years ago. IMPO, ON1 would be the last on the list.

I don't use plugins really, so that makes choosing easier.

The main thing, is the software updating new camera or lens releases, although I will be changing very little after next year.

I looked at Affinity. I will look at Youtube examples, because their promo video was like an over the top Hollywood production. I like simple stuff, sliders, controls, etc..

Thanks for chiming in.

When I was looking for a Lightroom replacement, I tried ON1 but didn't really care for the interface (this was a couple of years ago). I ended up moving to DxO PhotoLab instead. I have been quite pleased with its RAW editing capabilities. My main complaint is that DxO is a little slow in supporting new camera bodies -- it took them quite awhile to add support for my Canon M50 mirrorless.

I bought into ON1 a couple years ago - I was more impressed with the marketing than with the product...

Once you got the hang of it, it was ok... after several updates, it was more stable, features starting working better.

And then I upgraded a camera, wheels feel off, and I didn't want to throw anymore $$ their way

On1 has started hawking Photo Raw 2020 for release in October. One new feature is the ability to support custom camera profiles.

Cannot beleive this!! users have been requesting this option since July 2016 and now On1 wants you to buy the upgrade to be able to use what should have been available years ago i'm afraid I for one will not be paying some $80 to this option. See https://www.on1.com …profile-support/#comments (external link) for request in 2016. Russ

Many Thanks,
Russell.

I purchased ON1 on impulse, only to find out that for every one of their main tools I already had a better one in some other app. :-(

Not an update, a new version that you have to pay for, see my posting above. Russ.

Many Thanks,

As someone who has used and continue to use a few paid software starting with PS and a couple of open sourced software starting with GIMP, ON1RAW's learning curve is quite low imho. That said my "fallback" and probably what i consider my "goto" editing software is still PS (cc version)

You can get a "trial version" of almost all the software to see how you like it or not...try that if you haven't already....there is no "pressure tactics" to sell it to you, if you choose not to buy into them.

If you do decide to purchase PR 2020, at least make sure to use an affiliate code to get 20% off. Example codes: JWPHOTO, AM17.

Always to for affiliate discount codes before purchasing any photo software.
