Well I purchased a Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro IS USM and here is my first ever shot not that great but I just got home put the lens on and took the shot now to learn how to use it .Looking forward to see what it can do

Assuming that's hand held you would need a faster shutter speed. Also at f2.8 there isn't much in focus. I would think if you upped the ISO to 800 you could get a better result or of course use a tripod.

Although it has IS I would shoot at 1/100th at a minimum. It's a great lens. Just look at this thread.

f8 or smaller and shutter speeds faster as others have stated. You will likely be at high ISOs, even 6400 or more, depending on your ambient lighting. It would be best to get a cheap shoe-mounted flash and build a DIY diffuser to add lighting to the subject.
