Aside from a few small things (no Spot AF, dodgy noise starting at ~1200 ISO), I loved the 80D for birding. Depending on high ISO noise and AF performance, I may just add the 90D to my bag for sole use on my 600 III. 32Mpx and 10FPS is awesome, just wish it didn't have the AA filter. Great price too!

Read the DPReview on my commute this morning. Three things stood out.

  1. USB-C [2.0 speed ]
  2. Grip same as 70D and 80D (no joystick of course)
  3. You can charge the battery with USB-C cable.

My 80D has Single-point AF. I use it all the time. Page 114 of Owners manual.

SPOT AF and SINGLE POINT AF are not the same thing. The lack of this in the 80D makes it much more problematic for wildlife photography, especially of birds in foliage. The 7D2 AF system will beat the 80D six ways from Sunday in my experience.

DPReview got it wrong. It appears to be Micro-USB according to Gordon Laing.

Yeah, that was the big omission w/ the 80D, it only had Single Point, and that single point at times covered an area larger than the birds I was trying to track, or made it miss focus in challenging environs like you mentioned. Spot AF is where it's at, though Canon says it is a little slower to focus than Single Point due to the higher precision, and to use it only when necessary if utmost speed is required.

Thank You Russ. I first got the 6D MKII and it does have both spot and single point, and then I added a 80D and thought in use they were the same. Dumb me did not really realize the difference. Learned something today ( as I hope to a lot). It appears the 90D does have Spot Autofocus and Single Point AF if I read Canons site correctly.

ISO 6400 Raw file (external link) sample from 90D...

Lighting is poor and WB is not set correctly, once those are accounted for, will be interesting to see the characteristics of the noise compared to 80D and 7D2 6400.

Do you have the latest version of DPP?

As I was digging for DPP 4.10.40, I saw this, how long has this been available for iPad owners?
