adding lens name/type to Advanced properties on photo - how do you do it?

I have never been able to get my Canon cameras to add the lens name/type to the data stored in the properties for the Advanced Photo with the Lens Maker/ model etc

It is not as easy as simply adding the lens model to each picture (if I shoot 4 or 5 hundred that is a lot of work) I also often change lenses during a shoot

One way I have tried to do it is have different memory cards for each lens so I know "this card is this lens" and then I create a folder in Win10 for each lens but then my shots for the shoot are spread across different folders, or I use pen and paper to write down these shots are this lens etc and then do the different folder thing again.

I would love to figure out how to do it in the camera on the metadata, but is that possible?

I also saw something called lenstagger.com that seems to sort of automate it but you still seem to need to know which shots were which lens

how do you do it?

Or do most people just lump all shots into a folder and not worry about what lens was used for what shot?

The camera automatically adds it to the metadata.

As John has stated above, this is most likely already in your EXIF data. I use a utility called Jeffrey’s Exif tool, available at http://exif.regex.info/exif.cgi (external link). I can’t guarantee it will work with the later file formats but it seems fine with my 60D, 80D and some Sigma lenses.

I must have the cheap versions because my 80D and 6D mkii do not, they add the focal length f/stop etc but they don't add the lens maker and lens name such as Sigma 150-600 Sport

Is there a setting that you need to set for it to read the maker and lens name?

in the meantime I am creating different folders and then just need to change folders as I change lenses on the camera but need to remember which folder 100CANON 101CANON etc was used with each lens when I download to the PC.

I know the lens maker and name are in the "Advanced photo" part of the properties but can't find where I set it to recognize all the lenses

How exactly (what software) are you using to get to the EXIF?

If you have the Sigma dock, you might also check to make sure the lens firmware is up to date. Very early on with the dock compatible lenses there were some issues that were, as best I recall, corrected by a firmware update.

The thread at http://u88.n24.queensu.ca …um/index.php?topic=7109.0 (external link) also seems to indicated that ExifTool was updated around 2016 to properly recognize the 150-600 S (vs. C). Read the last entry in the thread which is by the author of ExifTool.

I go into the folder on my PC and open the picture folder, click on properties for any of the pictures and there is nothing in the advanced for lens name only the data from the lens settings.

This happens with ALL my lenses, my 24-105 L, 100-400L 70-200 L, the Sigma 18-300, any of the lenses I have never show a lens maker or lens name, even the Canon lenses.

Is my firmware on both cameras old? I have had the 6Dmkii for about 6 months.

when you open the properties on your pictures what lens maker and name do you see in the advanced photo properties? I have never seen anything, just the camera maker camera name and all the info about the shot

ok, held off heading out, gear is already in the car....

I opened lightroom and looked at the metadata there and it does list the lens and name so I am all set at least I can tell and update what I need

If you are using Windows 10 you must use the update from May 2019 and install the Microsoft Extension to view much of the metadata in File Explorer. See https://www.dpreview.com …ge-previews-on-windows-10 (external link) for small discussion of the details.

Also, check this thread, https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=18873652.

Why don't you create some "Smart Collections" in Lightroom.

Then it will likely work with the Windows 10 File Explorer, given the proper version and the extension (see my reply #9). I find the Windows File Explorer handy because you can sort on many parameters. Having said that, the same capability may very well exist in LR.

The extension is available from Microsoft at https://www.microsoft.com …tivetab=pivot:overviewtab (external link).

When you go into File Explorer, you may then need to add the appropriate columns for viewing your specific metafile data. Go to View along the ribbon, then "Details."
The default view will include File Name, Date, Type, and maybe Tags. Click along that row and you will get a dialog box with more possibilities. Click "More" at the bottom and you will find several hundred items that can be viewed by File Explorer, assuming the content is available in the file. You should be able to click on any given column and then sort. So if you click on lens (after adding) it will sort the list by lens.

Having said all, it should work the Sigma, but I'm not 100% positive as I'm not in possession of my laptop running the Windows 1903 version to properly test. But easy to do and nothing learned if nothing ventured.

So by your handle I assume you were Navy? I was an 1105 line officer for 13 years (O-4) so thanks for your service.

Navy Photographer 1972-1976 (when I went in my recruiter thought I was nuts, my draft number was 365 - I would never have gone to Nam, but I felt I needed to grow up)

Got to play with all the Leica's I could ever want! I was at NASP for about a year and a half and then on the USS Independence.

Thank you for your service also
