If you use DPP Express, the iPad version of DPP, then be prepared for it going to subscription based, perhaps as early as October.

Canon must be seriously hurting for cash flow. You can't even do much with DPP Express, so what is it going to be worth per month? $1?

I seem to recall that Canon created an online photo community a while back? Does DPP Express interface with that? Maybe the idea is to build a system that links the post processing app with an online sharing/storage system a la Adobe's Creative Cloud.

Yep, see https://www.dpreview.com …-dpp-express-app-for-ipad (external link) for a write-up. I haven’t had occasion to give it a try since I use an Android tablet.

I did read about it when it was announced. I didn't entice me. :-)

Who cares? I don't use the iPad version, I don't even use the desktop version.
It's inferior software.
If canon starts charging for software support of those who purchaser their hardware, it will only become a public relations hit.

It could also be the incompetent management at canon testing the waters - to gauge the public reaction.
To decide if the desktop version also shifts to a subscription business model.

Canon has been in a downward spiral for some time.
This just continues the trend.

Looks like it's time for me to archive off the DPP installation, it is a matter of time before they try to do this with the main app. :(

I keep DPP up to date and always use it a first step to cull files before importing to LR. DPP's downsizing algorithm for 'fit to screen' display is very good - contrasty which creates the illusion of sharpness. I own DXO which is very good but lacks a few things that I like. If Adobe ever ticks me off (I have the subscription version) I just may just go back to DPP and perhaps get Affinity or something like that for the second stage.

IMO DPP lacks export sharpening. The sharpening is for the capture phase. DLO is great for de-convolution, etc. True digital corrections for each lens, not 3rd party corrections. Many years ago I processed using DPP, converted to TIFF and opened the files in PS for resizing and export sharpening. That was a nightmare for mass editing so I switched to LR. I kept CS6 but when Mac Catalina comes out you won't be able to install or re-install as the installer is 32 bit.

They could improve the highlight/shadow recovery and add micro contrast and dehaze tools.

Sorry for going off topic.

When is the last time you’ve used the product. The newer versions (4+) have been vastly improved over the older 3+ versions. Of course it all depends on what you do with the images. I don’t make a living from photography and I find the capability of the newer DPP quite adequate.

Quite possible, I'll give you that.

I just downloaded DPP 4.10.50 a couple of weeks ago after reading an article about free processing software,
which mentioned it as an excellent tool as a RAW converter.
I've not used it before, but I may begin using it if I tire of the conversion needed for 5D4 files
before they can be used by CS6.

I don't use Apple/MAC products due to their closed ecosystem, so DPP Express matters not to me,
but DPP may turn out to be a good tool for me.
