I love the hi res sensor. But for BIF, the auto focus is unreliable. Even single focus point is soft. Stay away is my suggestion. When it works, great. That’s about 10%’ in my experience. I have tried everything except spot focus for BIF. Try that tomorrow. ߘ. YMMV.

Thank you! I know some people recommended turning off face detect in the autofocus menu, but that doesn't seem to work for everyone. It's a bummer because everything else about the camera sounds fantastic.

And that is what irks me about getting this body. I have seen what it can produce...I have also seen the number of times it doesn't produce.

Amazing sequence of photos.
Beautiful.
Love seeing the (to me) unseen natural world of birds. Thanks for sharing.

These are very, very fine. Would you mind sharing your auto-focus settings? How many active focus points, etc. Anything that might be of assistance. I am about ready to give up on BIF with my 90d. Thnx.

An oddity that I have observed, many times, when shooting AI Servo, center focus point, or center 9 points: My 90d will often take a photo, even though the active focus point is not on the bird (I am not the best at tracking BIF). This invariably results in a soft image, even though I have set priorities to "focus". This just adds to my inventory of useless images, and to my frustration. Anyone else have this experience? I suppose I could send the camera in to Canon Service, but my expectations for improvement are pretty low. I appreciate any suggestions. :-|

Here's what I've been wondering for a while:

does the 80d produce better results for BIF compared to 90d? If so, then why? How did Canon go backwards in this respect?

There has to be something going on. From everything I've heard the 80D focusing was great so I don't see how the next camera, with the same or similar focus system, would be significantly worse. The final page of the link I had posted mentioned that the person having these issues saw a repair slip talking about a "bad sensor board shutter and metering controller and some misalignment". I wonder if this was a manufacturing issue that Canon will soon have a recall about.

Wondering if the R5, even if more expensive, would be a better way to go in order to stay in the Canon camp.

The M6 mark II seems to be a mirrorless version of the 90D and doesn't suffer any focus issue as far as I know. The probably the best solution to this. The only reason I'm not considering the m6ii is the lack of a headphone port.

And that is as it is mirrorless. When th e90D is used in liveview, ie uses the same focussing method as the M6II, then it does not have these 'misses'.

However, using a 90D in liveview all the time is not practical for handheld airshow or bird photography with a long tele /zoom lens attached.

The guys in the photo enjoyment threads are reporting fantastic success with the R5. I want one badly for birds.

I currently have the 7D2 and 90D. Which one should I sell once I get the R5? I think it will be the 7D2. The 90D has a much greater pixel density than the 7D2 or R5 and therefore more effective reach. For me the 90D does great for static birds, just as well as the 7D2 (using the 100-400mmII). I have not found much difference in AF for BIF but that might be because I'm not good at following flying birds.

Eventually though Canon might come out with an M7 with a crop 90D-type sensor and the same eye AF as in the R5. That will change the game once again. Interesting times for photographers.

Yeah that's why I would normally suggest the M6. The M6ii has an accessory viewfinder that looks pretty cool. It would've been awesome to give the 90D the ability to use it as well.
