Upgraded to the 90D from the 600D a couple of weeks ago. Really enjoying it so far and a big leap in handling and image quality in my experience. Birds in flight are a challenge but I think that's down to user error more than anything else at the moment. Here are a couple if shots taken over the last couple of days. Don't know why I'm favouring 4:3 crops at the moment but there we go :)

Today I thought I would try using the AV mode on my 90D for the first time doing some bird photography.
Normally I would use manual mode.

Started off in landscape orientation and then switched to portrait orientation.
When I switched to portrait orientation, I noticed something changed with the focus point.
I could see multiple focus points squares in the viewfinder and they would move around as I adjusted the position of the camera.
Not all of the focus point squares were visible but a lot of them were.

When the camera was in landscape orientation, only the focus point in red, was visible in the viewfinder.

Wondering if what I was seeing in portrait orientation was specific to AV mode, I then switched to manual mode and the same thing happened with seeing multiple focus points in portrait orientation and only one in landscape.

I have taken portrait orientated pictures of birds before in manual mode and I don't remember this thing happening with the focus points.
It could have but I'm not sure.

At this point, I had the focusing cluster set to manual select: spot AF
The focus mode was set to one shot.

The below picture should provide a better explanation as to what I'm talking about.

The picture on the left side with the red focus point is the only focus point I could see in the viewfinder (AV mode) when the camera was in landscape orientation.
The picture on the right shows almost exactly what I was seeing in the viewfinder (AV mode) when in portrait orientation.
I didn't see that many focus point squares but most of them were visible.
I'm guessing the ones that are red are the ones I was seeing in the viewfinder.

What I'm wondering is, does this seem normal regarding what went on with the focus points?
Why would I only see one focus point in landscape but in portrait, see multiple ones?

You have the menu option ‘orientation linked AF points’ turned on which changes your AF points depending on the whether you are horizontal or vertical.

yeah, C.FnII 10 is where you can change it back if you want. I like having them separate personally

Thank you both.
I did have that setting changed based on a recommendation.
I guess this was the first time I switched between landscape and portrait since I made that change in the setting.

What's weird though is after taking a series of pictures switching between landscape and portrait, I couldn't duplicate seeing the multiple focus points in the viewfinder when switching to portrait.
I'll have to play around with that C.Fnll setting a bit more to get use to how it works.

Not only does it change the point, but also the AF mode if you select a different one when in that orientation.

ie if you set a single point AF when in horizontal orientation, turn it to vertical you can select another AF point and remain in single point AF.

But, you can also set a single AF point in horizontal orientation and then when you change to vertical select a completely different AF mode , ie 9 point, all points, etc and select you AF points as applicable. Then you have single point in horizontal and the alternate AF mode when vertical.

Ok, that solves the mystery for me.

I must've been shooting in portrait orientation at some point prior to Monday evening and changed the AF mode at the time and forgot that I had done that.
That would explain why I was seeing the multiple AF points in portrait orientation and not in landscape orientation.

I'm still learning how to use this camera and I tend to experiment with settings and then forget to change things back.

Today I was out again doing bird pictures and for most of the time, I was shooting RAW.
Decided to try shooting JPG for the first time with this camera for some of the pictures.

After a while, I saw some kind of hawk land in a tree fairly close to me.
Took a number of pictures.
Was quite happy about finally being able to get some fairly close up pictures of a hawk.
Then as I was reviewing the last of the hawk pictures after it flew away, I noticed the camera was still set to JPG.

So, I screwed up on two things.
Forgot to change back to RAW after taking a couple JPG's and, didn't notice that I hadn't done that when I was reviewing some of the hawk pictures before it flew away.

One of these days everything will come together!

You can shoot RAW + JPEG at the same time, your camera will save both files on your memory card.

Have you downloaded the Canon 90D User Guide (external link) yet? << click on LINK

Click on "Drivers and Downloads"

IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/2jCyUCj (external link) Manuals with arrow (external link) by inspeqtor (external link), on Flickr

Scroll down to the seventh download till you find "EOS 90D Advanced User Guide"

Click on the filename that will download the file but it will NOT save the file to your computer.

Click on "Open in Acrobat on the right hand side"

Do you have Adobe Acrobat Reader downloaded to your computer? If not that is a FREE download and you will need it for this.

IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/2jCuJ8F (external link) Download (external link) by inspeqtor (external link), on Flickr

Once you have opened the file in Acrobat Reader NOW you can save the file to your computer.

Now to have your camera save both RAW and Jpeg to your memory card, go to page 199

IMAGE: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50296959797_750b361d11_c.jpg
IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/2jCz4Q2 (external link) Raw Plus JPEG (external link) by inspeqtor (external link), on Flickr

Your camera is still showing the TOP image. To see the bottom image TAP on the words "Image Quality"

In the TOP image it is showing only the Large Jpeg is selected. The RAW is not selected showing the BLUE DASH LINE.
To add the RAW tap on the MIDDLE image of the RAW then tap SET in lower right corner.

Now you should be able to shoot both RAW and Jpeg at the same time.

I do not know what the second choice for Raw does.

Hope This Helps!

Thanks for the link to the manual.

I am aware how to set the camera to shoot both JPEG and RAW at the same time, it's just that I usually don't use the JPEG option very much.

I appreciate all the information provided in your reply.

I found these last night at 10:00PM EST in my neck of the woods.....

These are not the greatest but not bad for NOT having an actual telescope.

I also used my 2.0TC on these and they are cropped

Not great is relative.
Not sure what the first one is but the second is a quantum leap above all the results I have achieved so far.
