I am really struggling with my camera. There are obviously settings that got changed... I do not know what settings changed or how they got changed.

I looked in the EOS-90D PDF manual (eos90d-ug4-en) did a search for "focus" but came up with nothing. Then on the left side under the listings I saw "AF, Drive, and Exposure Settings" so I clicked on that. I am pretty sure I want to be on the One Shot mode which is what I always use for probably 90% / 95% of my shooting and always Live Screen when shooting the moon using my tripod and I always use my RS-60E3 remote when shooting the moon.

For my single point focus point I see on page 128 it talks about this but does not really explain to me how to set my camera to get this. Shortly after I bought my camera I was able to set my camera to do this, but I do not know how to do this any more.

At the very top of page 132 #1 says Press the (showing two different options) what are these options and where are these options on my camera body? Will either of these options help me with the problems I am having?

The second image I showed you, "The image cannot be magnified in "L+Tracking AF mode"

Does anyone here know what this is and why am I now getting this when I try while in Live Mode to zoom in using the + magnifying button at top right corner on back of camera?

Thank you to anyone??

I meant to add, could I call Canon and get any help from them on these problems?? Do they have a Customer Service phone number?

I don't think they would be of assistance with questions like these. The Canon manual is not really a great "how-to" guide. I like David Busch's "Canon EOS 90D Guide to Digital Photography" -

Thank you!! Just ordered the book!! Be here Monday!

I bought the camera and 18-135 lens in 2019 direct from Canon and I also bought the 4 year CarePak so I could send it to them, but really I feel it is just a setting (or 2?) gone wrong. Maybe I will get the help I need from the book.

To turn off face tracking and select single point focus. While in live view, press the Q button, then on the left of the screen select the AF with the face icon, then at bottom of screen, select the single point focus and then set.

Steve,

Thank you for trying to help. but you are talking Greek to me now. Face Tracking? Face icon? Single point focus? I just went to Live View and pressed Q but I have no idea what is what.

The first thing I do when I get a new camera is look for a video tutorial about that camera. That 'tutorial' genre has taken the form of a tour through all the buttons and all the menu settings. They can end up being pretty long and will contain a lot of information you'll never use. With most complex software -- and let's face it, modern cameras are mostly software -- most users will only use about 20% of its functionality. But every user will use a different 20%.

Watching a tutorial that covers everything introduces you to the camera's whole system; how the menus are organized, what each option does and why and when you might want to choose it. This is a more holistic approach to the camera than hunting and pecking for individual features or options.

Tutorials will also teach you about a camera manufacturer's vocabulary. We talked the other day about Drive Modes and how the 10-second delay is accessed through the Drive Mode menu, which is also used to select single-shot or the various forms of continuous shooting. It's a common menu that contains a few unusual options, but also the very ordinary options. You should know what it's called and how to get there even if you never use most of the options.

My advice would be to start over with this camera. Reset everything to factory defaults, including the custom C1 and C2 settings. (There are menu options to do this.) Then watch a video.

Pay specific attention to the things you use most and the things you would never want to touch. Learn how to configure those C1 and C2 Mode Dial settings. (That's what Canon calls that knob on the top left.) Those are your friends. You can set up your camera for a specific kind of shot and save those settings to C1 or C2. If you're out shooting and start fiddling around in, say, C1, and mess things up, switch to a different mode, then switch back. Now you're back to your known C1 settings.

Tutorials are easy to find on YouTube. Search for 'Canon 90D tutorial'. Here are a couple of them.

This one is very comprehensive and takes about 2.5 hours to watch, but he does break things into chapters so you don't have to sit there the whole time.
https://www.youtube.com …b_channel=MichaelTheMaven (external link)

This one covers the same material in about an hour.
https://www.youtube.com …69s&ab_channel=JaredPolin (external link)

Once you watch a tutorial, the manufacturer's user guide will be much easier to navigate when searching for specific functionality. You'll know their vocabulary.

Where do I find 'How to RESET the camera to factory default"

Under the 'Wrench' settings, menu #5, look at the 2nd and 3rd items.

#2 - Custom Shooting mode (C1, C2)
Open that menu and choose: "Clear Settings". This will set your C1 and C2 settings back to default.

#3 - Clear all camera settings
Does what it sounds like. You have to be in a mode other than C1 or C2 for that option to be available.

In the past I have always just used the center square focus option, not the multiple focus options, but last night I had to use the multipoint options. How do I change it back to the single focus square?

Also while in Live View I wanted to enlarge the live view but I got a screen saying that was not possible. How did this get turned off and how do I fix that?

Please forgive the first image being so much out of focus, but you can see my problem of not getting the single focus square. I used my cell phone for these two images.

I was in Manual mode for this.

Thank you for any help you can give me!

On the very top of your camera there is a small button between the shutter button & the scroll wheel. (It has a square with 3 spots on top & 1 spot below.) Press that button & it will cycle through single point & multi points. Keep pressing to get to single point.

Thank you Jaci! That does seem to work, but it is not the same as what I used to have. What I used to see was a square in the center of the screen that was colored GREEN. I will start using your tip, until the day I might figure out how I had my previous settings set.

Not sure why I didn't mention it the first time, but one thing you can try doing if you suspect turbulence is causing your focusing problems is to back off of your focal length. At least for telescopes, the amount of atmospheric turbulence sets an upper limit to the magnification you can use and still get a sharp focus. Astronomers use the term 'seeing'. The more turbulence there is, the worse the seeing. I would assume the same applies to cameras.
