Driving through George Bush Park this morning, I saw a family of 5 Killdeer, foraging in the park grass, in the cool sunshine.

One of the juveniles, posing.

They were close, 20 meters or so, these are cropped a bit.

Great results! - maybe not an ideal situation, but very realistic and you really nailed it :-)

Bolsa Chica Wetlands in Huntington Beach, CA this morning. Heavy crop from around ~15-20yds. So far, the 90D with the 500mmII has been working as I had hoped :-). I do miss some of the features of my 5D4 but not a deal killer.

I want to believe the 90D is a fantastic camera and I've not wasted my money but I'm not sure whats going on.

Picture below is one of 20 images "My dog" which I took but only 1 is a usable image, the rest are just too soft or not sharp! I have no idea whats going on, something is not right. For static subjects I'm getting so many bad images, I'm starting to have my doubts

You've posted some nice images with 90D in the past. Were the keeper rate similar with those, i.e., 1/20, or has it gone worse?

I wouldn't say 1/20 but the keeper rate on most shoots is low. I've enabled to display focus point in camera raw so I can see where I'm aiming .. I took over 100 photos of the Green Woodpecker focusing on the eye, most images are soft. Went out again this morning and opted to take the 5D Mark IV only...

Think I'm just used to being spoilt by what the 5D Mark IV produces. Before I had the 90D I borrowed a 7D Mark II for a week, looking back through those images the images are so much better in similar conditions.

I'm also spoiled by 5D IV, but soft images, which I've also encountered while I had the 90D, shouldn't be happening because of the camera body per se. I don't know what's with 90D. I really wanted to keep mine, but after an extensive testing, I just didn't want to deal with all the frustrations. I blamed it on the bad combo with my Sigma 150-600C, so it's both surprising and disappointing to hear that the keeper rate suffers quite a bit with the 100-400L II, as well.

Martin ... could it be your arm? My shooting has vastly improved since I started using a monopod.. I just shake too much..

Normally your shots are spot on and tack sharp.. so I don't know what it could be . ... Possible culprits are "glare", "mist," and "trembling'

I'm stumped! 90D Facebook group I'm a part of people are complaining of similar issues. There are a few decent images but a majority of them are missed focus or soft. Noise I can handle but soft images? Could it have anything to do with auto focus with lack of contrast? I'm no expert when it comes to diagnosing this kind of issue..

I'm steady on the arm, proved that with the 5D Mark IV this morning - not one focus issue..

Interesting. I haven't shot anything but product shots on a light table with tripod, so far. BH has a sale on the new 70-200 IIIS and it should come in Thursday. Hope to do some wildlife shots in The Wrinkle Ranch next weekend. Post up if you find something specific, please.

Retired, but still learning ...

I think the 90d auto focus needs quite a bit of contrast. I had similar experience with a Great Egret, recently. Lovely pose, but soft images, I was focused on his white shoulder. I discarded them all.
Today, I got these of a Gulf Fritillary on Lantana. Of course, I was close, 4 meters, but focus point was on her face and spot on (these are over 50% crops).

I have the camera set on focus priority, but it seems to shoot anyway, without sharp focus. I have had similar, good results with other high contrast targets.

Martin.. Have you tried this? I have 2 custom settings on my 90D. C1 is for BIF and uses AI Servo, and C2 is for duck and bird portraits where I use One Shot.

Here is one I took today.. using one shot and a monopod and lots of light.

so you're using the custom spots to switch between AI servo and one shot? that seems like a waste of the custom spots...

No, I use my C1 and C2 for video settings "4k & 1080p 120 fps".. I don't photograph birds in flight or fast movers so therefore I don't see a need for AI Servo to be used that often.
