Back Button Focus (BBF):

Martin.D wrote in post #18965845 (external link)
Started using back button focus - getting far better results!

cdmazoff wrote in post #18965848 (external link)
Why do you think that is? What's the logic behind it?

Martin.D wrote in post #18965856 (external link)
Not sure - Today I used Back Focus Button - AI Servo - Single point AF and got hardly any out of focus images.. very poor lighting too..

pknight wrote in post #18966244 (external link)
My question exactly. If this makes a difference, I would love to know why. And, if the solution to get sharp shots is this simple, that would be great!

This below link may help explain the understanding of the Back Focus button capability that was added years back. Personally i have used it and under certain shooting variables but primarily very seldom. I do have the 90d coming and will test it with the new body.

This has been an available option since long before "digital"
Many of us swear by it. It is not a magic bullet for all, as it doesn't make the hardware any better, but by separating the AF function from the shutter release, and exposure lock, one can take better control of how the automated functions of AF AE and shutter release occur. for me it makes the whole process seem much more "mine" and a lot less "the camera's"

Thanks Ron. I read the article, but the 90D seems to work a little differently. That may be because I couldn't find any menu item to "activate" it. It seems to work without requiring a menu change. However, it does not seem to lock the focus. I did a short test by pressing the button to focus, moved and pressed the shutter release ... it refocused and took a sharp image. If I hold down the button, then move and press the shutter release, I get the expected out of focus image. The article said the button locked the focus so you could re-frame an image, it appears you will need to hold the back-button down (on the 90D) while re-framing.

Or have I missed something?

I think you have, unfortunately I don;t have a modern EOS in front of me, and when I try to do this from memory, I end up posting instructions for 12 year old EOS 1D bodies! lol (Custom function 4-1 in the old days)

I think you'd need to go to the wrench icon in your menu, and then look for custom controls. On an 80D I believe it is C.Fn III-4 (Custom Controls — Shutter, AF-ON, AEL buttons)
On a EOS 7D Mark II: it's Custom Controls — Shutter, AF-ON, AEL buttons

It's the orange camera icon, then C.FnIII:Operation/Others, go to item 3, pick the shutter icon, then select the second icon, Metering start.

When I'm in BBF, I set focus to Servo, so focus never locks. But it stops focusing (effectively the same as locking maybe) when I release the BBF button.

It works just by pressing the AF-On button BUT you need to unlink the shutter button first.. In custom settings. select the shutter press set and then you have 3 icons. Choose the middle one.. Press set.

I am using the Vello Freewave Plus wireless remote purchased from B&H originally for my 70D with absolutely no problem for my new 90D. I used it to take photos of the Mercury transit across the sun a week or so ago.

I don't know what N3 means, but the 90D works great with the RC-6 remote trigger.

In a visual encyclopedia kind of way, the 90D uses the mini-stereo-plug shape; not the big round connector with the three pins.

Thanks guys. I have a Pixel Pro TW-283 system so would just need to buy a cable with the E3 connector.
