Finally got a chance to use a 1.4x III extender with the 100-400L MKII and the 90D on Saturday. Certainly provides a noticeable amount of reach, but it took some getting used to only having the 27 AF point

Lucky you. Most lens/TC combos that come to f/8 on the 90D only get center and spot AF, even with all Canon gear.

It would be interesting to see if the latest versions of the Kenko Pro 300 DGX 2x work with the 90D, and allow all AF points at f/8. I've stacked a Kenko Pro DGX 1.4 with a DG 1.4, but the 90D (and the 7D2, as well, IIRC) would rack focus back and forth with those and my 400/4DO II.

Update from CD: Okay, I've been giving it a lot of thought.. as to how to get rid of fuzzy photos.

1) to counteract my tremors (I am ill) I got a good monopod with ball head..
2) I increased my f stop from 8 to 9
3) I went to Back Button Focussing

The lighting wasn't the best... but these are pretty clean shots.. ISO (auto) @ 2000

Looking forward to some sunny days where I can capture some real BIF

Basically all shots of the day were clean

why would f9 help? you'd have been better shooting wide open and lowering your iso. i personally wouldn't use anything over iso 1000

Hi Kev.. I shoot with a 1.4 ex firmly attached to my 100-400. It never comes off. I'll drop stuff and etc.. I noticed that in a lot of my shots extra depth of field would come in handy (like if there are 2 birds side by side)... so I set it to f9 and I like it.

As I said before but will make clear here: I'm terminal and weak and shakey.. I have friends who try to get me out when the weather is good. I'm on meds.. I'm slow and brain foggy.. I do my best. I've found a way to keep going.

Oh and on this day there was no light to speak of

HI Martin.. there was something on the net that listed lenses known to work well with or not work well with the 90D

It's probably more a list of lenses that get away with their softness when they are magnified less at 100% because of larger pixels.

Any problem such a lens has, it is with itself; not the with 90D. The 90D serves any lens better than any Canon APS-C except the M6-II, with the same sensor.

10 minutes after sunset...iso higher than i would normally go with my 70D, so not sure i would've been able to come away with anything with the old camera...bit of noise...but i'm not the best at handling noise, so may be ways to improve that...maybe that topaz denoise?

Beautiful, moody shot, with great subject isolation, Andre.

100% recommend Topaz DeNoise AI, it single handily got rid of my fear of shooting at higher ISOs. Throughout my photography career/experience, there's only been a handful of times where something has played a pivotal role in revolutionizing my workflow or improving my final shots: Topaz DeNoise is one of those.

Don't listen to the EXIF here :p this was shot on the 90D w/ my 600 f/4 III, and the ISO is actually 10,000. Forgot to add: this photo was processed w/ Topaz DeNoise AI. Lightroom was making a huge mess of things, and DN-AI rescued the shot.

Having already been a owner of the respected Canon 400 f/5.6 prime i just recently picked up the 90d and also the Sigma 150-600mm C model. Comparing the Canon prime versus the Sigma was a very close call in image quality on static images. Tested them both at 400mm at f6.3 and pretty much equal handheld or using a monopod with both. Of course the Canon focused faster but its hard to compete with the Sigma having IS handheld even at 600mm. Did not try any BIF since its not very easy acquiring the exact same variables like comparing static images. BTW i did before ever getting the Canon prime had the original Canon 100-400 iS and the 400 Prime was definitely sharper, thus the reason i sold the Canon zoom. Being at 400mm 95% of the time made no sense IMO to keep the Canon Zoom. Now with the Sigma on the 90d i have given thought of selling the Canon 400mm Prime. But to answer your question yes the reliable Canon 400 Prime works very well with the new 90d.

Regards, Ron
