Straddling the Greenwich Meridian
Two superb bridges over the A14 just over two miles apart.
One is in the Western Hemisphere; the other in the East.

In the east we have the Bar Hill Bridge

The A frames tell the bridges apart
Bar Hill has the frames ALONG the bridge; Swavesey has the frames ACROSS the bridge.
Apparently so that motorists can tell them apart...

Excellent pictures of a beautiful bridge!!

Welcome to POTN Ken Barley!!

American Bridge Company ABT style swinging counterweight railroad bridge.
built in 1931. abandoned in place, and raised in 1975.
one of six built in this style in the US

the bridge as it is today.
the yacht club at the base of it bought the property it sits on and after a 12 year battle with the Army Corp of Engineers and State Historical Society got permission to tear it down. theyre putting up a parking lot. initially they wanted more boat slips but i think the cost of this demolition was more than they could afford to chew.

the bottom section of the moving span has been cut into and mostly removed. the next step (as we speak is to start cutting up the counterweight i would think. then the A frame

Great Bridge!
Where?
Was it water powered? Assume the tank was a counterweight and filled with water.
Was the default up or down?

Port Huron Michigan across the Black River at the mouth of the St. Clair River.

no it was electrically operated with a pair of big motors, one on each side.

the counterweight (still in place) is filled with cement. its going to be a real bear for them to remove that. i cant imagine how much it weighs! several hundred tons id bet.

i dont know that there's a default setting for it. it was in the up position for 53 years.

here's a picture of the bridge down

Interesting! However, it seems over-complicated to me

Advice, C&C welcome

It is indeed a lot more simple Piet and very impressive in operation.

It isn't the original bridge. That was in such bad repair that it was removed and was rotting in the field just behind where the photo was taken. Then the museum was opened in June 2000 and the bridge was moved into the museum grounds. We were lucky enough to be stopping in the camp/caravan site about ½ mile away from the bridge just 2 weeks after the museum opened and learned quite a lot from the new staff.
