"Eye-Fi Explore" Wi-Fi memory card as per:

https://www.wired.com/2008/05/how-to-geotag-y/ (external link)

I think the linked article is dated 2005.

Has anyone had any experience with these or any SD card that will write the geolocation data into the photo EXIF ?

I just cannot comprehend how the card could do this by itself without linking to some other device.

I also figure that such an operation would slow down the picture taking process.

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

Like you I'm not sure it ever worked to add metadata. However, the wi-fi interface for the older line of cards was discontinued in September 2016 for security reasons. The "Mobi" line still exists. See https://www.theverge.com …-x2-wi-fi-sd-card-support (external link). Check the embedded links for more details.

By the way the cards didn't use GPS to establish location, but apparently used a system called WPS, an approximation at best. See https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/52868983 (external link) for an explanation of how it worked.

Thanks for the extra information.
That bit about not using GPS would have been enough for me to lose interest quick; I manually geolocate all of my photos and try to pinpoint them right down to the exact spot.
They have had this satellite GPS coordinates business pretty detailed for several years; the guys I work with on occasion have devices in their tractors and spreader trucks that will warn them when they veer from the intended path; I am talking inches, not miles.
They can circle a field on the outside edges and it will tell them how many acres are in that field; that alone has made liars out of many farmer customers when doing work that is paid by the acre.
They even have devices on tractors such that you can turn loose of the steering wheel and it will plant a two mile long row of corn that is straight as a gun barrel = amazing !

It would be nice if it were so simple as inserting a special SD card and the information then be written in the RAW files.
