Looking for opinions.

I am in a "predicament" - I was looking for a 2nd 7D2 body as a back-up and found one literally being "given" away if I purchased his 70-200 MKIII (he switched to Sony). So, being impulsive, I jumped at the deal and now have both the Mark II (which I love and is on my camera 95% of the time) and the Mark III lens.
Which to keep??

Any issues with the new coatings?

Both seem sharp - the new one has less use obviously and the coating upgrades.

Sell the III and make a little more $$, or keep the III?? The cost difference would be maybe $300 to "upgrade" to the III.

I have a photographic memory, just wish I'd remember to take the lens cap off more often!

Did you by your Mark II new or used? If new then you have a track record of issues if any.
How old is your II.
Service. The III will serviceable longer.
Sleep on it.

Thanks! That's what I've started to do locally.
I got the Mk II used (only a few months old) - no service history.
Mk III also used - again only a few months old - hardly ever used as owner didn't use it much even before he switched to Sony.
I do like the fact that the III will be serviceable longer.
I love the images from the lens, so I'd be happy with either really...

May post one or both of POTN in the next couple of days. ;)

Check the lensrentals.com conclusion on the differences. Go to
https://www.lensrentals.com …200mm-f2-8-is-ii-and-iii/ (external link) and scroll down to the bottom.

I personally would go with the “III”; as others have pointed out it may be serviceable for a longer period. But when you read how the lenses are basically the same internal parts, this may be a mute point. If they run out of a part for a “II” then they have run out of that same part for the “III”. But a common repair is the flex cable replacement, so that would mean the lens that has been used the least.

Frankly the 70-200 F/2.8 version 3 and the 24-105 version 2 are the worst updates in canons history. They should be ashamed on themselves

never thought I would see Canon stoop to this level for updates......But they went there

May I agree partly?

I'd agree with the 24-105L, as that was a new design which was only a little better than the older version, and which I did not particularly like in environments with less light in the first place, especially at the longer end.

The 70-200 F/2.8 was just a tiny upgrade, yes.

However, what happens in lens manufacture is that the moulds have to be replaced, once a certain number of specimens is manufactured - they are only reliable for so many copies. These are two relatively popular lenses, so I reckon they had to replace the moulds for these lenses, and Canon, as well as other lens manufacturers. often use this as an opportunity for a new AF motor, or a small increase in performance of the glass, like the better coating of the 70-200, and a slightly altered lens formula for the 24-105. They have been doing this over the years, it is what it is. At least they do try to improve, even slightly when starting with new moulds.

It takes a lot of time (years) to redesign a lens completely, especially a complex zoom lens, apart from testing and setting up production.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

Looks like I will be keeping III (which is what I wanted anyway since it's newer).
Bought the III and 7D2 (2400 actuations) with Canon grip for just under $1500US total.
Found a buyer for my old 7D2 (25K actuation) and version II 2.8 lens locally for $2K US. :)
Not bad for a weeks works of perusing kijiji.

If both work perfectly then keep the III. The II will eventually be dropped from Canon service.
