Considering trading 7D2 for 5D4 indoor sports?

I shoot a lot of indoor volleyball and I'd like to improve on the grainy images and ISO limitations of the 7D2.
I shoot outdoors (kids and dogs) as well as wakeboarding / surfing.
The focus tracking on the 7D2 is amazing and it's a fast camera - I usually usually shoot in bursts of 3-5 shots though.
I don't typically find myself at the upper end of my 70-200 wishing I had more reach either.

Hoping to get real life experience from folks out there who have or have used both the 5DIV and 7DII.

Do I unload my EF-S lenses and 7D2's and pick up a 24-70 2.8 and keep my 70-200 2.8 of course and 1.4x (and 85 1/8) and pick up a 5D4?
The 1DxII is out of my budget BTW.

Thoughts?

I have a photographic memory, just wish I'd remember to take the lens cap off more often!

The 5D4 and 7D2 were my staples for shooting all sports and active events in the past few years. The 5D4 has just as good an AF system, and better IQ of course, it just has a lower burst rate you may have to deal with.

You can keep your Tokina for the 5D4, it makes a great 16mm prime on the FF. The other EFS and APS-C mount lenses can probably go along with the 7D2 to help the move to the 5D4. I would personally recommend it. Once I had the 5D4, the 7D2 was just a backup for me, and I just recently finally sold it.

Not indoor test shots, but actually probably worse. Nighttime football and marching band... It has been some time since I have shot indoor HS basketball, so I don't have recent samples. I do shoot pro ball indoors, but lighting is always better than HS facilities.

ISO 25600

THANKS! Very helpful - although my wife may disagree! lol.
I have a lead on a really nice 5DIV with less than 9K actuations for a great price. If I can get it, I can easily sell my 7D2's and the EFS APCS-C lenses and get both the camera and a used Canon 24-70 2.8 I...

I might be hesitant on getting a MKI of the 24-70. I had one for a few years, and I wasn't overly impressed with the IQ. I have a MKII now and it has been wonderful.

Just make sure you find a great deal on the MKI, give it a run for a season, and then try to sell it at almost no loss if possible if you need to upgrade.

I shoot both side by side. For indoor work in low light, the 5D4 is certainly a step up.
7D2 files clean up nice, but I find 5D4 files need no cleaning at all.

As for the 24-70mm, that's totally up to you how you go about it.
Its a lens I actually hate, while at the same time I sometimes "need"
My compromise was a Tamron VR version.

Thanks!
How do you find the focus speed on the Tamron? I've read it's quite a bit slower than the Canon?
Is certainly on my list though.

I hardly notice the difference. Mind you I shoot indoor performances, not sports. But it worked fine for Ballet.

Both were shot with 5D IV w/70-200 f/2.8 indoors at 1/640sec, f/2.8. I typically shoot 1/2000sec or faster outdoors but I compromise SS and aperture when I shoot indoors under poor lighting conditions. I could have gone higher than ISO 3200 with the 5D IV to bump up SS with these, but I chose not to since these were just for fun shots of my boys. Although I do burst shots, I still like to time things. Whatever the action sports shots or BIF, there's a predictable point where you want to start the burst. I don't like to mindlessly press the shutter and let the burst take over and hope that it'd yield a perfectly timed image or two. So, while it's really nice to have a camera with 10 fps + burst, I don't really mind a slower 5D IV. I never have any issues with buffer, either, especially with sports like tennis, football or volleyball where a burst of 3-5 shots are often plenty. I'd highly recommend 5D IV.

Thanks for the advice!
May have found a Mk I in good condition from original owner for about $525US which doesn't seem too bad a price.
If I can swing it right away though, I'd jump to the Mark II.

You lose reach with the 5D4 but it cropped amazingly. Bird from left hand corner. Cleaner files but you lose FPS.

At first I was worried about losing reach, but I rarely find myself at the 200 end of my lens with indoor volleyball and was more limited by the poor lighting in HS gyms. And I don't shoot a bull burst on the 7D2, I usually shot in short bursts to time the hit, dig, etc.
For animals playing / running. the extra speed is nice.
Not in a rush, and currently I still have 2 7D2's, so I'll likely have both the 5D4 and 7D2 in my bag at the same time for bit. :)

Found a 5D4 in excellent condition but with 50K actuation for $1700 US locally - may jump on that as soon as one of my 7D2's sell. ;-)a
