How do I do that?

P.

Settings, Accounts. You should see an option to convert to a local account. You can then set no password.

How can I turn off - asking for a pin on start up and every time it goes to sleep, I had to set it up when I first set the laptop up.

P.

I'm not sure I understand your question. I guess you are trying to get rid of log on PIN number?

If so go to the thread at https://www.tenforums.com …gn-windows-10-64-bit.html (external link) and specifically scroll down to reply #4 where it says to use netplwiz. Then follow the steps in that video.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you asking how to shut down? If so click on the Windows logo symbol in the lower left corner of your screen. Click on the symbol that pops up that is a circle with the line at the 12 o'clock position; the ISO on/off symbol. Choices of sleep, shut down and restart should appear. Select what you need.

No mate its just the microsoft pin I have to keep putting in at start up, and even when the machine goes into sleep mode - the screen wakes when I touch the enter key but even then asks for the pin before it will resume with the page I was on.

He's asking how to avoid signing onto Windows every time, a common complaint. It is required because he's using a Microsoft account where either a full account password or PIN is required. The only way to avoid authentication is to use a local account.

If you also don't want the PIN from sleep, try the steps at https://laptoping.com …n-windows-10-laptops.html (external link). They may not work however with WIn 10 Home.

Now go to Settings, Accounts, Sign-in Options and change your password. It will ask for your current password. Leave the new password boxes blank. With no password, it'll boot straight to the desktop.

The issue has been created by Microsoft and is specific to Windows 10 Home. Because there is some user backlash, this could be changed in the future. For a better understanding of the issue, and a way that supposedly can eliminate both the PIN and password, https://www.howtogeek.com …s-local-account-creation/ (external link). Scroll down to the bottom for the work around which involves setting up a new account while totally disconnected from the web. Personally, I’d wait until some new releases come out, which may put the option back into the settings panel.

Just an update on my new Asus win 10 laptop -

All is going well I have worked my way round the different system compared to win 7, have tydied it up cleaned the start up bumpth, and got windows photo viewer back (:-P) the only working gripe I have is the plasticly feel of the touchpad and find it hard for edditing my RAW files as ther is no soft touch keys like there was with my old Toshiba Satelite Pro.
Dont get me wrong the processor is faster - the screen graphics are better - love the batt life - over 7 hours in batt saver mode - just the damn touchpad feels so crap and rattles upon touch.

All else is brilliant esp the price its brand new and ended up costing me £125 for a £350 laptop (still has 12month warantee also)

Not bad I guess.

Buy a mouse. Wireless preferably but wired is OK. Best think you can do with a touch pad is disable it.

100% agree. Some time back I had a touch pad that was so sensitive that a long sleeved shirt dragging across the pad would be sufficient to drive the cursor nuts. These days when I get a new laptop I immediately disable it and go with a wireless mouse.

I will add that I have had some issues (erratic behavior) with the Microsoft Micro Mouse 4000 (only with Win 10) so went back to my old standby brand of Logitech.

you can disable a touch pad?

never knew that. my right hand thumb half sits on the upper right corner and VERY OFTEN moves the cursor to a spot it ought not be...

to stay on topic, win 95 never gave me any issues. i dont remember if i ever had 98. i ran XP for a very long time. even specifically ordered a couple of computers with "downgraded" XP to avoid 2000 and ME. 7 has run like a champ for many years now (9..) and ive got a new 10 model that im using for editing and Word/Excel stuff (and very limited web access)...

the whole user interface on 10 is horrible in my opinion. nothing is in the right place and nothing is named the same. and too much added bs that cant be removed...

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

My complaint is the whole way the touchpads work - this one is loose from the get go, and to be honest very cheap and plasticky intouch and operation, I still prefer the old types with the left and right keys completely seperate.

As I use my laptop as a laptop its sits on my lap all the time and never ever used on a desk or table - so I cant see how a mouse would work (it would have to function sitting on the casing next to the touchpad - but not mutch room).

Its all a price point thing as my old Toshiba was a £1000 laptop when it was new - I waited over ten years till I could afford one, with this new one I had to go with the cheapest of the cheap new - so guess like all things there are limitations.

You get what you pay for.

You have discovered that it is a model-specific IMPLEMENTATION of any feature, like a touchpad, or Thinkpad-like pressure 'joystick', and even keyboard FEEL, which makes so important that the purchase experience includes actual HANDS ON experience in a retail store, so important.

It is analogous to handling a CAMERA to see how the button layout and control functions work, FOR YOU, before buying any camera, as well.

This buy-on-web has its limitations, and you have just experienced first hand a major reason to make your choice (or your exclusions!) in store.
