While on a recent hiking trip I packed all my gear into two soft case backpacks and set out with two other travelers. I used the smaller bag as a day pack and several items in it apparently were damaged at some point. First, the 18-135 auto focus would not work, though manual does. My 60 D lcd screen flashes black background when reviewing photos. Also have a 50 mm lens that the cap wont stay on as if the filter ring is bent.
I have insurance, with deductible, on all my gear, always been more concerned about total loss than slight damages.
My question, would you try to repair an 18-135 and 60D,or sell/trade while disclosing the problem?
What is the best way to get an estimate on repair and places that may do the repair or trade?
I'm guessing the cost may be more than I want to spend as my deductible is high enough that insurance will not be of much help.
If the whole bag had went to the bottom of the river I was on, it would be an easy decision and a better situation for me but it didn't happen that way.

I know this sounds silly, but the lens was not inadvertently switched from AF to MF? I have had that happen to me

On the screen, I once had an issue with a loose connector In the LCD panel. It was easy to get to the cable and get it seated again. You can find some guides on 60D repair at https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Canon_EOS_60D (external link). Use the one titled LCD Screen Swivel Assembly. One thing that isn’t in the video is the screws are slightly different sizes so make a diagram to help keep track of the screw locations.

One other thing, any chance you are using Magic Lantern?

It's not silly, I have done such things before but not this time. I moved the switch and nothing good happened, tried on another body and still nothing. Manuel still works, it's very difficult for me at distant objects as I wear bifocal glasses and can't seem to conquer the task. Close up objects not as much of a problem.

Thanks, I'll check out the link when time permits. No I'm not using Magic Lantern, not even sure what it is. I'm not very comfortable working on something such as cameras but I may not have anymore to lose and might possibly learn something by trying.

You’ve used the built in diopter correction feature of the 60D? You can also purchase a correction lens for the eyepiece.

It isn’t worth having Canon fix the screen, if they even will. Some research seems to indicate that the Canon cost was about $350 as of a few years ago. KEH Camera has an Ex+ condition in stock for $367. See https://www.keh.com …mera-body-only-black.html (external link) for details on the used offerings by KEH.

The gear you've listed isn't worth much, sadly. I'd consider it a loss and start again. Maybe others would disagree.

As a 60D owner I’d disagree. I just returned from Europe and the 60D served me well. I also own an 80D, which I left behind since weight was a consideration.

I loved my 60D. My opinion is based on the resale value. It doesn't make sense (to me) to pay for repairs that exceed the value of the camera.

I bought the 60D and the infamous 18-200 around this time of the year in 2011.

I am amazed it still takes pictures!... :p

I'm at 99% sure the way to go is cut my losses and start over with the one lens and 60D body. I can still get some use from the 60D as is, the lens I will likely replace soon with the newer version of the 18-135 or get a used 24-105L. I have a 70D and a 7DII , just hate to see one drop out of the line up.
My deductible is higher than buying a used lens even an open box or demo and it would have some warranty. I'm not sorry for having the insurance, it's just not going to benefit me in this case.

we gave out daughter the 18-135 so she would have a bit more range and wouldnt need to change lenses as often (bought a 17-55 f2.8 for the wife) and during a trip to europe, it started rattling like there was a screw loose inside. it would sometimes bind up the zoom function.

i sent it in for repair and it was $100 or more i think. it started acting up on another trip; it was as if the gears inside had broken teeth and focus and zoom would bind and sometimes just skip.

its going to my work bench to play with because i think that lens is only worth about $140 used. we gave our daughter a 17-55 f2.8 of her own since shes now a bit older and more responsible (not that she mistreated the 18-135) and its a full 2 stops faster at 135mm?

id just spend the money on a new lens vs sending yours in for repair

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

Also depending on which 18-135, it may really not be worth repairing. There are 3 versions.

This is correct, mine is the original version, now wondering which is better, the newer stm or usm version or perhaps a 24-105 for replacement . My old lens served me well as a good walk around lens, took excellent photos and I'm already missing it.

I have the 18-135 Nano USM version and I like it very well for a general use lens. Have even used it for the track & field/cross country sport use in the past
