I want to get a 5Ds, but I'm unsure if I can make it useful for my purposes.

I do studio work. My camera mounts to a tripod, and I use manual focus lenses. My 6D body has magic lantern, which offers picture-in-picture. Specifically, one section zooms on a portion of my frame. And at the same time, the other portion allows me to see how my shot is framed. With the 5Ds, which is not compatible with magic lantern, it looks like I have to press the zoom button -- and then it turns my entire screen into that zoomed portion. So, although I can then focus, I lose awareness of my scene. If my model moves slightly out of frame, I'll be completely unaware of that.

Does the 5Ds offer anything that would make this process easier than I'm anticipating?

If you have Canon glass, just get the EOS R

I have a 5DS and use manual live view often for trees, but wouldn't for moving people. If a person stayed put, I'd consider live view. But in studio, the EOS R gives me images every bit as nice, and I don't need huge 5DS full size files.

My lenses are in my signature.

You would probably enjoy the awesome manual focus indicator in the EOS R. I just tried it with the Zeiss 135mm Apo Sonnar I bought recently, and Canon 90mm tilt shift which are both manual focus. If you have a camera store nearby, bring one of your lenses, or borrow theirs, and give the manual focus tool a test.

Maybe you are familiar with it already.

Yes, I believe I've seen that before. I know it has MF aids, but it's only about 30mp which isn't much more than I have now. Thanks, though.

I set my 5DS on Medium RAW anyway these days, and spare full size files for the redwood forest.

If Canon releases an 80 megapixel mirrorless next year and if it has the same focus tool, that may be a good option if you want the large files. I found that 50 megapixels really clogs processing. I can even tell if a file I'm working on in Lightroom is from the 5DS without looking at file data, because I can hear the fans increase speed from the computer case.

I heard the rumor that they're going to offer a new R with much higher MP, and I'm looking forward to that.
