Hi all...
So i have a question for you all, more of a quandry....
I have been using the same monitor for a good 5 or so years and i have started getting light bleeding round the panel and it's just a bit tired... so i thought i would upgrade it...
I thought this would be simple enough by going and buying a 27 inch IPS monitor. Not so simple it would appear.
The team in my office (gamers and engineers) have told me i would be better getting a VA panel as IPS is tending to give greys instead of blacks...

Then i thought.... Rather than getting something completely colour accurate would i not be better getting one of the most popular types of screen?

I mean sure it's great that i can view and edit the picture to be totally accurate on my 50 inch fully colour calibrated 50billion to 1 contrast, 400%SRGB screen but if someone looks at it on their iphone it will look completely different? (not that i have that screen, just an eg)

What would people recomend?
I very rarely print my images and they are mostly hosted online in a compressed format or sent to the client in full res jpeg.

Not professional advice, so take this as it is...

If you "very rarely print," then you're likely not one to be calibrating a monitor,
so my gut feeling is that you're on the right track here.

Me as an example: I have a pair of Dell UltraSharp U2412M 27-inch monitors.
They're a few years old now, with no light bleed, but different firmware revisions.
I haven't been able to find color-temperature settings to get them both on a
seemingly-identical keel. I've never calibrated, but I've been told by others here
that my editing seems true to color accuracy, and I do very little to nothing
with colors in post.

A few prints to a PRO-100 have turned out looking very realistic in color rendition
to my eyes and others, so I'm a happy camper.

Also, one of my monitors has had a flaky input logic board for a while, so it's been
relegated to 'secondary' display for the duration. It does weird things with colors
in certain pallettes or combinations, varying from one power-up to the next in severity,
so I'll be looking to obtain another pair of something when the one gives out
or sooner. Pricing for high-quality displays appear to continue on a downward drop
over time, so as long as the one still displays something not completely unacceptable,
I can wait for a great bargain.

Just a bit of harsh reality...

  • NO MATTER which monitor you have purchased, and NO MATTER if you calibrated it or not,
  • when you send a JPG file to any Average Joe (that is, someone other other than another compulsive buyer who also chose their monitor with care and then calibrated it at home)
  • Most monitors come from the factory adjusted to look nice in very bright retail stores, with boosted Brightness and Contrast, and most non-professionals don't touch that setting, unfortunately!
  • It will likely NOT look exactly how you would like -- unless they came and viewed the photo on YOUR monitor!

Most photographers who carefully choose and then calibrate their monitor simply want to make the image ON THE MONITOR match the image ON THE PRINT!

You need to give me OK to edit your image and repost! Keep POTN alive and well with member support https://photography-on-the.net/forum/donate.php

Sounds like you’re somewhat in the same situation as me.

I need color accuracy from my monitors but also rely on my PC for gaming so want something with GSync/Free sync and 144hz.

The Gigabyte ad27qd might be worth looking into. It has all of the above and from a review I’ve read seems to be pretty good for its color reproduction.

nitro XV272U apparently has the same innolux panel. Cheaper too.
