Recently bought the Canon R which I love so far. On my upcoming trip to Costa Rica (circa around # 15) I'm have a dilema about which zoom to take. I sold my Ver. II 100-400mm recently (probably should not have). So my options now are:

  1. Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (I also have a 2x Entender)
  2. Canon 70-300mm L
  3. Purchase a used ver. 1 100-400mm (push/pull) for around $500 -$550.

I do shoot birds but 90% "not in flight".

I'll also have with me my 6D Mark II as back-up and my Tamron 24-70mm and Canon 100mm Macro. I really only want to take 3 lens max which is why I'm asking about the 3 zoom options.

Any strong feelings? Thx.

My strong feeling is longer is better. Your old 100-400vII sometimes with a 1.4tc is what I'd want. When I went we spent a lot of time searching for animals in the forest and also for birds. It is hard to get close enough so reach helps a lot.

A macro is also a good thing to have.

My Costa Rica photos are HERE (external link) if you'd like to see what I got.

I'd certainly want the 400mm zoom for Costa Rica. I doubt I'd ever mount the 70-200mm, so I'd leave it at home.

Very excellent images. What gear did you use for the frog images? This trip will be number 14 or 15 for me. I've got plenty of toucans & other birds, monkeys, other mammals etc. This trip I want to focus more specifically on amphibians; frogs & snakes. I'll be in Sierpe and somewhere on the OSA (probably La Tarde on the border of Corcovado) for that so any tips you could share about the frog photo's would be appreciated. Thx.

Lucky you, I'd love to go back.

For the frogs I used a 5DIV with a 100mm L macro handheld for the daytime ones and on a tripod for the night ones. We had three very small LED cube lights, something like THESE (external link), that we hand-held for the night shots.

Marvelous shots!!! I like how you mixed in some environmental/people into the wildlife mix, gives us a more rounded look into your trip. What’s really interesting is the number of migrant birds you saw, I recognized a few that we get here over the summer!

Thanks Matt. We spent a lot of time driving normal roads looking for animals which also let us see how people lived which lead to the non-animal pictures. It is quite amazing to think that people live among what we (I) think about as exotic animals like monkeys and sloths. It is a great place to visit.
