I confess to having shot a few stumps with a 20 gauge during my Ruffed Grouse hunting years.
The best way to get the woods to yourself is tell everyone you see, "I've gotten some good sound shots, but haven't hit anything yet!"
Things in the woods can fool you. I've seen a lot of deer that after the light changes a bit turned out to be fallen logs, or a small bush. Fortunately I have never shot at one of them.
Strangest thing I've ever seen happened as I was walking up a faint trail on a ridge line. At the top of the mountain was a small clearing, about the size of the average living room in a house. On one side was a fallen log, and a person in full camo (gun season in Oklahoma, blaze orange clothing is required) sitting on the log, back to me. I didn't want to disturb him, so I quietly walked past, all the time wondering "how stupid could a person be, SE Oklahoma deer season and him wearing camo?" Anyway, as I got to the other side of the clearing I looked back, nothing there. Now I'm really curious, so I go to the log, no footprints, no sign that a person had ever been there. I go back to where I first saw him, nothing there. I don't really believe in haints, but sometimes I have to wonder.
