I'll be using for home movies, interviews, outdoors stuff. What's the best cost/value mic for casual general purpose use? I was thinking Rode on advice of a shop but then saw Canon Directional Microphone DM-E1 here: https://www.usa.canon.com …ophone-dm-e1#features_tab (external link)

Is the Canon worth it if I can get a good deal or refurb?

The Rode mics often have on camera mounts that will insulate them from camera vibration. If you have the original 6D you may not have auto focus vibration, but pan tilt from a tripod can transfer vibrations up to the mic that will be picked up as sound in the recording. The solid mount of the Canon will not insulate the mic at all, the suspension of "better" mics will dramatically reduce the sound picked up by the mic.

You also have options for dead cats etc.

I don't know about the actual sound comparison, but voice recording is not too demanding, anything will make an improvement over in camera.

Thanks for the heads up regarding vibrations. Something to think about. The Canon is not the lowest cost option, either, even as refurbs. Will probably go with Rode.

Directional microphones are at best marginal for what you want to do, unless you are going to use a boom pole, camera mounted they will pickup what is being recorded and everything down the road behind what is being recorded.

For interviews if your camera will work with a dynamic microphone one of the best is the Shure SM58 indoors and outdoors with a windscreen.

It is a unidirectional (cardioid) omni microphone which eliminates the need to wag the microphone during an interview and being handheld most of it's pattern is facing toward the sky keeping background noises to a minimum.

More than likely, unless your camcorder is a pro unit you will need a path cable to go from a balanced XLR to a unbalanced 1/8" TRS.
